1. A method for mounting a telematics device within a vehicle that has an on-board diagnostic unit for collecting diagnostic data and which is coupled to an original on-board diagnostic connector mounted in an accessible location within the vehicle to enable a diagnostic scan tool that has a connector which is unique to the type of vehicle to be coupled thereto to retrieve the diagnostic data, said method comprising:

  • mounting the telematics unit within the vehicle such that it is hidden from view within the vehicle;

    coupling an electrical cable to the telematics unit;

    removing the original on-board diagnostic connector from the accessible location in which it was mounted;

    coupling the electrical cable to the original on-board diagnostic connector; and

    coupling another diagnostic connector capable of mating with the scan tool to the electrical cable; and

    mounting the another diagnostic connector in the accessible location.
