Abstract

An exercise device having position verification feedback capabilities. In one embodiment, the exercise device generally includes a base unit defining a support surface, at least two position sensors arranged along a sensing plane relative to the support surface for detecting the presence of the user along the sensing plane, and a controller in communication with the position sensors to determine the user'"'"'s position relative to the sensing plane. In another embodiment, the exercise device is configured to simulate the activity of jumping rope. In a further embodiment, an exercise device is provided that is capable of measuring one or more parameters associated with a user'"'"'s vertical jumping ability.

Claims

1. An exercise device for simulating the activity of jumping rope, comprising:

a substantially horizontal support surface at least partially formed of a material that permits the transmission of light therethrough;

a plurality of light sources at least partially positioned beneath said support surface and configured and positioned to transmit light in an upward direction through discrete portions of said support surface to provide a plurality of light bands extending across said support surface and offset from one another along an axis;

a controller in communication with said light sources to sequentially activate and deactivate said light bands in a direction along said axis to simulate a jump rope passing beneath a user'"'"'s feet.

2. The exercise device of claim 1, wherein said light bands extend in a generally linear direction and are arranged substantially parallel to one another.

4. The exercise device of claim 1, wherein said controller sequentially activates and deactivates said light bands at a variable rate.

8. The exercise device of claim 1, further comprising at least two position sensors defining sensing paths arranged along a sensing plane located above said support surface, said at least two position sensors adapted to detect a presence of the user along said sensing plane.

9. The exercise device of claim 8, wherein said sensing paths of said at least two position sensors are arranged to define a sensing grid extending along said sensing plane.

10. The exercise device of claim 1, further comprising at least one position sensor adapted to detect a presence of the user upon said support surface.

3. An exercise device for simulating the activity of jumping rope, comprising:

a support surface;

a plurality of light source bands extending across said support surface and offset from one another along an axis, wherein a number of said light source bands are curved; and

a controller in communication with said light source bands to sequentially activate and deactivate said light source bands in a direction along said axis to simulate a jump rope passing beneath a user'"'"'s feet.

5. An exercise device for simulating the activity of jumping rope, comprising:

a support surface at least partially formed of a material that permits the transmission of light therethrough;

a plurality of light sources configured and positioned to transmit light through said support surface to provide a plurality of light source bands extending across said support surface and offset from one another alone an axis;

at least one position sensor defining a sensing path located above said support surface and adapted to detect a presence of the user along said sensing path; and

a controller in communication with said light sources to sequentially activate and deactivate said light source bands in a direction along said axis to simulate a jump rope passing beneath a user'"'"'s feet.

6. The exercise device of claim 5, wherein said at least one position sensor is vertically adjustable relative to said support surface to correspondingly vary a height of said sensing path above said support surface.

7. The exercise device of claim 5, wherein said at least one position sensor emits a visible beam of light along said sensing path.

11. An exercise device for simulating the activity of jumping rope, comprising:

a substantially horizontal support surface;

a plurality of light sources at least partially positioned beneath said support surface and configured and positioned to transmit light in an upward direction to provide a plurality of light bands extending across said support surface and offset from one another along an axis;

at least two position sensors defining sensing paths and arranged to define a sensing grid located above and oriented substantially parallel with said support surface, said at least two position sensors adapted to detect a presence of the user along said sensing grid; and

a controller in communication with said light sources to sequentially activate and deactivate said light bands in a direction along said axis to simulate a jump rope passing beneath a user'"'"'s feet, said controller providing a signal indicative of a location of the user'"'"'s feet relative to said sensing grid.

13. The exercise device of claim 11, further comprising a display;

and

wherein said signal comprises a visual indication on said display.

14. The exercise device of claim 11, wherein said signal comprises an audible signal.

15. The exercise device of claim 11, wherein said controller sequentially activates and deactivates said light source bands at a variable rate.

16. The exercise device of claim 11, wherein said at least two position sensor are vertically adjustable relative to said support surface to correspondingly vary a height of said sensing grid above said support surface.

12. An exercise device for simulating the activity of jumping rope, comprising:

a support surface;

a plurality of light source bands extending across said support surface and offset from one another along an axis;

at least two position sensors defining sensing paths and arranged to define a sensing grid located above said support surface, said at least two position sensors adapted to detect a presence of the user along said sensing grid; and

a controller in communication with said light source bands to sequentially activate and deactivate said light source bands in a direction along said axis to simulate a jump rope passing beneath a user'"'"'s feet, said controller providing a signal indicative of a location of the user'"'"'s feet relative to said sensing grid, wherein said signal comprises a pair of lights, one of said lights indicating a presence of the user'"'"'s feet within said sensing grid, another of said lights indicating an absence of the user'"'"'s feet from said sensing grid.

17. An exercise device for simulating the activity of jumping rope, comprising:

a support surface;

a plurality of light source bands extending across said support surface and offset from one another along an axis;

at least two position sensors defining sensing paths and arranged to define a sensing grid located above said support surface, said at least two position sensors adapted to detect a presence of the user along said sensing grid; and

a controller in communication with said light source bands to sequentially activate and deactivate said light source bands in a direction along said axis to simulate a jump rope passing beneath a user'"'"'s feet, said controller providing a signal indicative of a location of the user'"'"'s feet relative to said sensing grid, wherein said at least two position sensors emit a visible beam of light along said sensing grid.

18. An exercise device for simulating the activity of jumping rope, comprising:

a support base defining a substantially horizontal user support surface;

two or more light sources integrated into said support base and at least partially positioned beneath said support surface and configured and positioned to transmit light in an upward direction to provide a plurality of light bands extending across said support surface and offset from one another along an axis; and

a controller in communication with said light sources to sequentially activate and deactivate said light bands in a direction along said axis to simulate a jump rope passing beneath a user'"'"'s feet.

19. The exercise device of claim 18, wherein said light bands extend in a generally linear direction and are arranged substantially parallel to one another.

20. The exercise device of claim 18, wherein one or more of said light bands are curved.

21. An exercise device for simulating the activity of jumping rope, comprising:

a base defining a substantially horizontal user support surface, said base at least partially formed of a material that permits transmission of light therethrough;

a plurality of light sources at least partially positioned beneath said support surface and configured and positioned to transmit light in an upward direction through discrete portions of said base to provide a plurality of discrete light bands extending across said support surface and offset from one another along an axis;

a controller in communication with said light sources to sequentially activate and deactivate said discrete light bands in a direction along said axis to simulate a jump rope passing beneath a user'"'"'s feet.

22. The exercise device of claim 21, wherein said plurality of light sources are integrated into said base.
