Abstract

A wireless networking system uses mobile and fixed transceivers to achieve a network with changing topology. A routing process includes quality-of-service considerations in the network to allow for features such as file or other data transfer, streaming audio and video, digital telephone communications, etc. The routing process adapts to transceiver units entering, leaving, or moving within, the network. Auxiliary networks such as the Internet, campus or corporate intranets, home networks, etc., can be accessed through the wireless network. Features, designs and user interfaces for the units are described. Security and access control of media content and other data is presented.

Claims

1. A multihop wireless communication network, comprising:

one or more mobile radio units (MRUs) including a first node; and

a plurality of fixed radio units (FRUs) including a second node and one or more other nodes that are adaptable to serve as intermediate nodes along a plurality of possible multihop paths that are configurable between said first and second nodes;

wherein said second node is configured to dynamically determine which multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths is used to transmit data packets from the first node to the second node, while the data packets are being transmitted from the first node to the second node.

2. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to dynamically determine which multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths is configured between the first and second nodes, in order to maintain a requested quality of service (QoS) provision.

3. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to dynamically determine which multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths is configured between the first and second nodes, in response to a change in a quality of service (QoS) provision.

4. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to dynamically determine which multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths is configured between the first and second nodes, in response to a change in priority among two or more quality of service (QoS) provisions.

5. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to dynamically determine which multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths is configured between the first and second nodes, in response to a change from a first quality of service (QoS) provision to a second QoS provision.

6. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to dynamically determine which multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths is configured between the first and second nodes, in order to maintain a communication connection between the first node and the second node.

7. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to dynamically determine which multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths is configured between the first and second nodes, based on a change in a position of said first node relative to one or more FRUs of said plurality of FRUs.

8. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 7 wherein said second node is configured to cause said first node to dynamically change selection from a first FRU in a first multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths to a second FRU in a second multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths, in order to reduce the number of hops between the first and second nodes.

9. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to cause said first node to dynamically change selection from a first FRU in a first multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths to a second FRU in a second multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths, in order to reduce congestion in the network.

10. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to cause said first node to dynamically change selection from a first FRU in a first multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths to a second FRU in a second multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths, in order to reduce a traffic load experienced by an intermediate node in said first multihop path.

The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node is configured to cause said first node to dynamically change selection from a first FRU in a first multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths to a second FRU in a second multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths, based on a change in radio link quality between radio units in said first multihop path.

12. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node includes domain information that is only accessible to the first node.

13. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 12 wherein one or more of the intermediate nodes in either a first multihop path or a second multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths includes domain information that is not accessible to said first node.

14. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 12 wherein a secure token having security information stored thereon is used to authenticate the first node to the second node, in order to allow the first node to access said domain information.

15. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 14 wherein the secure token includes one of a smartcard, a subscriber identity module, and an authentication device.

16. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein said second node includes one or more fixed connections, each configured to allow said first node to communicate with an entity.

17. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 16 wherein said entity includes one of a storage device, an application, a wireless network, and a fixed network.

18. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 17 wherein the storage device includes one of a hard drive, CD-ROM drive, and DVD drive.

19. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 17 wherein the application includes one of a gaming application and a utility application.

20. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 17 wherein the fixed network includes one of a public telephone network, an integrated services digital network, and the Internet.

21. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 17 wherein the wireless network includes one of a public land mobile network, a wireless local area network, and a cellular network.

22. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein traffic along one or both of first and second multihop paths of said plurality of possible multihop paths is communicated in a peer-to-peer decentralized manner.

23. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein traffic routed along one or both of first and second multihop paths of said plurality of possible multihop paths is communicated in a secure end-to-end manner.

24. The multihop wireless communication network of claim 1 wherein traffic routed along at least a portion of a first multihop path of said plurality of mulithop paths is encrypted and traffic routed along at least a portion of a second multihop path of said plurality of possible multihop paths is not encrypted.

25. A method of communicating between a source radio unit and a destination radio unit in a wireless communication network, comprising:

at the destination radio unit, executing a routing algorithm to determine a first multihop path between the source radio unit and the destination radio unit, said first multihop path including one or more intermediate radio units configured between said source and destination radio units; and

as the source radio unit is transmitting data packets to said destination radio unit, and based on a quality of service (QoS) requirement received by said destination radio unit, dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units, to form a second multihop path between the source and destination radio units.

26. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed in response to a change in topology of the wireless communication network.

27. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed in an attempt to maintain a desired QoS.

28. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed in response to a change in the QoS requirement.

29. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed in response to a change in priority of two or more QoS provisions received by said destination radio unit.

30. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed based on said destination radio unit'"'"'s receipt of a change from a first QoS requirement to a second QoS requirement.

31. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed based on the destination radio unit'"'"'s attempt to maintain a communication connection between the source radio unit and the destination radio unit.

32. The method of claim 25 wherein the source radio unit comprises a mobile radio unit (MRU), and dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed based on a change in position of the MRU relative to one or more of the other radio units in the network.

33. The method of claim 32 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed in order to reduce the number of hops between the MRU and the destination radio unit.

34. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed in order to reduce congestion in the network.

35. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed in order to reduce a traffic load experienced by an intermediate radio unit in said first multihop path.

36. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path is performed based on a change in a radio link quality between radio units in said first multihop path.

37. The method of claim 25 wherein the destination radio unit includes domain information that is only accessible to the source radio unit.

38. The method of claim 37 wherein one or more of the intermediate radio units in either the first multihop path or the second multihop path includes domain information that is not accessible to said source radio unit.

39. The method of claim 37 wherein a secure token having security information stored thereon is used to authenticate the source radio unit to the destination radio unit, in order to allow the source radio unit to access said domain information.

40. The method of claim 39 wherein the secure token includes one of a smartcard, a subscriber identity module, and an authentication device.

41. The method of claim 25 wherein said destination radio unit includes one or more fixed connections, each configured to allow said source radio unit to communicate with an entity.

42. The method of claim 41 wherein said entity includes one of a storage device, an application, a wireless network, and a fixed network.

43. The method of claim 42 wherein the storage device includes one of a hard drive, CD-ROM drive, and DVD drive.

44. The method of claim 42 wherein the application includes one of a gaming application and a utility application.

45. The method of claim 42 wherein the fixed network includes one of a public telephone network, an integrated services digital network, and the Internet.

46. The method of claim 42 wherein the wireless network includes one of a public land mobile network, a wireless local area network, and a cellular network.

47. The method of claim 25 wherein traffic along one or both of said first and second multihop paths is communicated in a peer-to-peer decentralized manner.

48. The method of claim 25 wherein traffic routed along one or both of said first and second multihop paths is communicated in a secure end-to-end manner.

49. The method of claim 25 wherein traffic routed along at least a portion of said first multihop path is encrypted and traffic routed along at least a portion of said second multihop path is not encrypted.

50. The method of claim 25 wherein dynamically substituting one or more of the intermediate radio units in said first multihop path with one or more different intermediate radio units to form the second multihop path as data packets are being transmitted from the source radio unit to the destination radio unit is performed without a disruption in communication between the source and destination radio units.
