System and method for automatic registration notification for over-the-air activation
First Claim
1. An unactivated mobile station programmed to perform a method comprising:
- sending, to a wireless communications network, during a process that can be used by an activated mobile station to announce a current location of the mobile station and enable the wireless communications network to direct incoming calls to the activated mobile station, a message not including a valid mobile identification number, the message comprising information distinguishing the message as for activation of the unactivated mobile station, wherein the sending of the message causes the network to send activation parameters to the unactivated mobile station, and wherein the information distinguishing the message as for activation of the unactivated mobile station comprises an over-the-air activation function ID number; and
receiving the activation parameters sent from the wireless communications network responsive to the message comprising the information distinguishing the message as for activation of the unactivated mobile station.

Abstract
A method and system automatically activates a mobile station in a wireless communications network. The system includes an over the air activation function (OTAF) processor in the network that initiates an activation process in response to receiving a registration message from a mobile switching center serving the mobile station requesting the activation. Each mobile station has a unit of information stored into it at the time of its manufacture to enable it to request over the air activation. That unit of information is either the network routing address of the OTAF processor, or alternately, it is a value that is translatable into that address, either an OTAF ID number that is the same value for every mobile station or it is a sequentially serialized dummy value for the mobile identification number (a dummy MIN). When the mobile station is turned on for the first time in the network, it requests activation over the air by transmitting to the local mobile switching center a registration order. The registration order will include one of the three alternative forms of the information unit described above, either the routing address of the OTAF processor, or the OTAF ID number, or a dummy MIN.

16. An unactivated mobile station programmed to perform a method comprising:
-
sending, to a wireless communications network, during a process ordinarily used to announce a current location of the mobile station and enable the wireless communications network to direct incoming calls to the mobile station, a message having a format of an ordinary registration order comprising information distinguishing the message as for activation of the unactivated mobile station, wherein the message comprises an electronic serial, number of the unactivated mobile station for recording in a visitor location register of the wireless communications network and an over-the-air activation function ID number, and wherein the message does not comprise a valid mobile identification number; and receiving number assignment module activation parameters sent from the wireless communications network originating from an activation process initiated in an over-the-air activation processor responsive to the message comprising the information distinguishing the message as for activation of the unactivated mobile station.

17. A mobile switching center programmed to perform a method comprising:
-
receiving, from a mobile station, an activation message having a format of an ordinary registration order, wherein the activation message comprises information distinguishing the activation message from an ordinary registration order, the information distinguishing the activation message from an ordinary registration order comprising a value translatable into an address of an over-the-air activation function processor; preparing a registration notification message comprising an unpopulated mobile identification number field; providing the activation message to a signal transfer point configured to translate the translatable value into the address of the over-the-air activation function processor; and storing, in a record in a visitor location register associated with the mobile switching center, at least some of the information distinguishing the activation message from an ordinary registration order. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20, 21)
