Abstract

A phased array system having antennas, non-variable phase shifters, and switches. The non-variable phase shifters are configured to be coupled selectively to a transmitter or a receiver. A non-variable phase shifter is configured to shift a phase of an electromagnetic energy wave that traverses the non-variable phase shifter by a fraction of a period of the electromagnetic energy wave for a range of frequencies of the electromagnetic energy wave. At least one of the fraction and the range associated with the non-variable phase shifter is different from at least one of the fraction and the range associated with other non-variable phase shifters. The switches are configured to couple selectively the antennas to the non-variable phase shifters, the transmitter, or the receiver.

Claims

1. A phased array system, comprising:

a first antenna;

a second antenna;

a first phase shifter configured to be coupled selectively to a transmitter and to be coupled selectively to a receiver; and

a switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the first antenna to the transmitter, to couple selectively the first antenna to the receiver, to couple selectively the second antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the second antenna to the transmitter, to couple selectively the second antenna to the receiver, and to cause selectively an open circuit between the first antenna and the first phase shifter and between the second antenna and the first phase shifter.

2. The phased array system of claim 1, wherein a dimension of an aperture of the first antenna is less than a wavelength of an electromagnetic energy wave.

3. The phased array system of claim 1, wherein a separation between the first antenna and the second antenna is less than a wavelength of an electromagnetic energy wave.

4. The phased array system of claim 1, wherein a dimension of the switch is less than five microns.

5. The phased array system of claim 1, wherein the switch comprises:

a first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna and the second antenna to the first phase shifter; and

a second switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna and the second antenna to the transmitter and to couple selectively the first antenna and the second antenna to the receiver.

6. The phased array system of claim 1, wherein the switch comprises:

a first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the first antenna to the transmitter, and to couple selectively the first antenna to the receiver; and

a second switch configured to couple selectively the second antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the second antenna to the transmitter, and to couple selectively the second antenna to the receiver.

7. The phased array system of claim 6, wherein the first switch comprises:

a first first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the first phase shifter; and

a second first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the transmitter and to couple selectively the first antenna to the receiver.

The phased array system of claim 1, further comprising a second phase shifter configured to be coupled selectively to the transmitter and to be coupled selectively to the receiver, wherein the switch is further configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the first antenna to the second phase shifter, to couple selectively the first antenna to the transmitter, to couple selectively the first antenna to the receiver, to couple selectively the second antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the second antenna to the second phase shifter, to couple selectively the second antenna to the transmitter, and to couple selectively the second antenna to the receiver.

9. The phased array system of claim 8, wherein the switch comprises:

a first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna and the second antenna to the first phase shifter;

a second switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna and the second antenna to the second phase shifter; and

a third switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna and the second antenna to the transmitter and to couple selectively the first antenna and the second antenna to the receiver.

10. The phased array system of claim 8, wherein the switch comprises:

a first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the first antenna to the second phase shifter, to couple selectively the first antenna to the transmitter, and to couple selectively the first antenna to the receiver; and

a second switch configured to couple selectively the second antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the second antenna to the second phase shifter, to couple selectively the second antenna to the transmitter, and to couple selectively the second antenna to the receiver.

11. The phased array system of claim 10, wherein the first switch comprises:

a first first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the first phase shifter;

a second first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the second phase shifter; and

a third first switch configured to couple selectively the first antenna to the transmitter and to couple selectively the first antenna to the receiver.

The phased array system of claim 1, wherein the first antenna and the second antenna are configured substantially along a line so that an electromagnetic energy wave having a zero degree phase shift and radiated from each of the first antenna and the second antenna is substantially perpendicular to the line.

The phased array system of claim 1, wherein the first antenna and the second antenna are configured substantially along a curve within a plane so that an electromagnetic energy wave having a zero degree phase shift and radiated from each of the first antenna and the second antenna is substantially perpendicular to a first line tangential to the curve at the first antenna and a second line tangential to the curve at the second antenna.

14. The phased array system of claim 13, wherein the curve is substantially circular.

The phased array system of claim 1, further comprising a third antenna, wherein the switch is further configured to couple selectively the third antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the third antenna to the transmitter and to couple selectively the third antenna to the receiver, and the first antenna, the second antenna, and the third antenna are configured substantially within a plane so that an electromagnetic energy wave having a zero degree phase shift and radiated from each of the first antenna, the second antenna, and the third antenna is substantially perpendicular to the plane.

The phased array system of claim 1, further comprising a third antenna, wherein the switch is further configured to couple selectively the third antenna to the first phase shifter, to couple selectively the third antenna to the transmitter and to couple selectively the third antenna to the receiver, and the first antenna, the second antenna, and the third antenna are configured substantially on a surface within a space so that an electromagnetic energy wave having a zero degree phase shift and radiated from each of the first antenna, the second antenna, and the third antenna is substantially perpendicular to a first plane tangential to the surface at the first antenna, a second plane tangential to the surface at the second antenna, and a third plane tangential to the surface at the third antenna.

17. The phased array system of claim 16, wherein the surface is substantially cylindrical.
