Abstract

A system for disposing of medical waste is generally configured to sort waste items into a plurality of disposable containers according to applicable rules and regulations governing the handling and/or disposal of such items. In some embodiments, a system comprises sorting stations, each of which houses a number of disposable containers. Each station can identify an item of waste, determine the most appropriate container for the item, and facilitate disposal of the item in the appropriate container.

Claims

1. A sorting system for sorting a plurality of medical waste items, the sorting system comprising:

a control system;

a plurality of container compartments, each container compartment configured to receive a removable container;

a plurality of removable containers, wherein each of said removable containers comprises an opening and a machine-readable identification key associated with at least one of a plurality of waste categories such that the machine-readable identification key indicates the container'"'"'s type to the control system, wherein the container type defines a category of waste to be placed in the container;

a movable lid associated with each of said removable containers,

wherein the removable containers are configured to be placed within the container compartments,

wherein the movable lid is movable to an open position and a closed position,

wherein at least a portion of one or more of said lids comprises a section that permits visualization of the fill level of the container associated with said lid, and

wherein the sorting system is configured to send an alert signal when a container is full so that said full container can be replaced;

a scanner for receiving barcode information from a waste item; and

at least one key reader within the sorting system that reads the machine-readable identification key associated with the container to determine the container type;

wherein the control system is configured to electronically assign the scanned waste item to at least one waste category based at least in part on the information obtained from the scanner and a database comprising waste item classification information;

wherein the control system is configured to determine the appropriate container based on the waste category to which the scanned waste item is assigned and the container type;

wherein the control system is further configured to identify the appropriate container to a user by automatically moving the lid associated with said appropriate container to the open position to permit disposal of said waste item; and

wherein the control system is further configured to automatically lock the movable lid associated with said appropriate container in the closed position after receipt of the waste item.

2. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the control system is further configured to automatically lock said frill container prior to sending said alert signal, thereby restricting access to said frill container.

3. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the control system is configured to communicate said alert signal to a technician or maintenance person.

4. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the control system is configured to communicate said alert signal to at least one of a pager, cell phone, PDA, or computer terminal.

5. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the control system is further configured to indicate to a user that said frill container is frill and cannot accept any further waste items.

6. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the control system is further configured to indicate to a user that said frill container is frill and directing the user to an alternate container.

7. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the control system is further configured to indicate to a user that said frill container is frill and directing the user to an alternate sorting station, wherein said alternate sorting station is in electronic communication with said sorting system.

8. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the section that permits visualization comprises translucent or transparent material.

9. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the section that permits visualization comprises a viewing strip.

10. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein said waste item classification information comprises classification information based on environmental or drug enforcement regulations.

11. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein said waste item classification information comprises rules and regulations affecting pharmaceutical waste disposal.

12. The sorting system of claim 1, further comprising a user input device configured to acquire manually-entered information regarding said waste item or container.

13. The sorting system of claim 12, wherein said input device comprises at least one of a touch screen or keyboard.

14. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said moveable lids is configured to be manually closed.

15. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said moveable lids is configured to be automatically closed.

16. The sorting system of claim 1, further comprising a timer to determine a replacement schedule for any one of said containers.

17. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said containers is reusable.

18. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said containers is configured to receive biohazard bags.

19. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said containers is configured to receive sharps.

20. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the containers are color-coded based on said waste categories.

21. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the control system is further configured to generate a manifest for at least one of said containers.

22. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the control system is further configured to electronically maintain an electronic log of the identified waste items and the container to which each of said waste items was assigned.

23. The sorting system of claim 22, wherein the control system is further configured to audit compliance with regulations based on said log.

24. The sorting system of claim 22, wherein the control system is further configured to audit usage or disposal of said waste item based on said log.

25. The sorting system of claim 1, wherein the machine readable identification key comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag and the key reader comprises an RFID reader.
