1. A method of operating an internal combustion engine coupled in a hybrid powertrain, comprising:
- extracting thermal and electrical waste energy from components of an electrical power system of the hybrid powertrain; and
during HCCI operation;
adjusting intake air temperature of the engine by coordinating said waste energy extraction, the coordination including, when a battery is fully charged, first using the extracted electrical waste energy to power an electrical heater in an engine intake.
