Volume management method and apparatus
First Claim
1. A volume management method for searching for an unoccupied area over a plurality of physical storage devices, to which at least one logical volume is assigned, said method comprising the steps of:
- receiving an unoccupied-area-searching request;
searching for an unoccupied area on condition that all present logical volumes, which have been already assigned to any of said storage devices, each still satisfies its information of requested average performance stored on a storage means for each of said present logical volumes which shares said any of said storage devices with the unoccupied area, assuming that a new logical volume occupies the unoccupied area; and
displaying information of said unoccupied area including an average performance allowed for the supposed new logical volume.

Abstract
A volume management method is proposed for setting at least a logical volume over a plurality of physical storage devices by taking requested performance of other volumes into consideration. The volume management method comprises the steps of: receiving a volume creation request specifying a requested storage capacity and requested average performance; forming a judgment as to whether or not there exists an unoccupied area satisfying the requested storage capacity throughout the storage devices; forming a judgment as to whether or not all volumes, which include existing volumes each sharing any of the storage devices with a volume to be created and the volume to be created, each satisfy its requested average performance by referring to information of requested average performance on a storage means for each of the existing volumes if the unoccupied area satisfying a requested storage capacity is determined to exist; and setting the volume to be created if all the volumes each satisfy the requested average performance.

5. In a management computer to be coupled to a storage apparatus in which a plurality of disk apparatus are configured to define plural physical storage devices, a managing method performed by the management computer for searching for an unoccupied area over the physical storage device, to which at least one logical volume is assigned, said method comprising the steps of:
-
receiving an unoccupied-area-searching request; searching for an unoccupied area on condition that all present logical volumes, which have been already assigned to one of said storage devices, each still satisfies its information of requested average performance stored on a storage means for each of said present logical volumes which share said one of storage devices with the unoccupied area, assuming that a new logical volume occupies the unoccupied area; and displaying information of said unoccupied area including an average performance allowed for the supposed new logical volume. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8)

9. A method for creating a logical volume over a plurality of physical storage devices, to which at least one logical volume is assigned, said method comprising the steps of:
-
receiving a volume creation request specifying a requested storage capacity and requested average performance; searching for an unoccupied area on condition that the unoccupied area satisfying the requested storage capacity exists, and that all logical volumes, which include present logical volumes that have been already assigned to any of said storage devices and each sharing said any of storage devices with a logical volume to be created and said logical volume to be created, each satisfies its information of requested average performance stored on a storage means for each of said present logical volumes; if existing unoccupied areas each do not satisfy said requested average performance, displaying a warning; and when a user indicates that the requested logical volume is still to be created, creating the requested logical volume and allocating the unoccupied area to the created logical volume, whether or not the present logical volumes each shared by the requested logical volume satisfies its requested average performance. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11)

12. In a management computer to be coupled to a storage apparatus in which a plurality of disk apparatus are configured to define plural physical storage devices, a managing method performed by the management computer for searching an unoccupied area over the physical storage device, to which at least one logical volume is assigned, said method comprising the steps of:
-
receiving a volume creation request specifying a requested storage capacity and requested average performance; searching for an unoccupied area on condition that the unoccupied area satisfying the requested storage capacity exists, and that all the logical volumes, which include present logical volumes that have been already assigned to one of said storage devices and each sharing said one of said storage devices with a logical volume to be created and said logical volume to be created, each satisfies its information of requested average performance stored on a storage means for each of said present logical volumes; if existing unoccupied areas each do not satisfy said requested average performance, displaying a warning; and when a user indicated that the requested logical volume is still to be created, sending to the storage apparatus an instruction to create the requested logical volume and allocating the unoccupied area to the created logical volume, whether or not the present logical volumes each shared by the requested logical volume satisfies its requested average performance. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14)
