1. A method for adaptive adjustment of a communication system, the method comprising:

  • monitoring impulse noise on a communication channel during communication service, wherein monitoring the impulse noise comprises;

    monitoring data transfer errors occurring on the communication channel;

    determining whether any of the data transfer errors are packetized errors; and

    determining a number of corrected packetized errors and a number of uncorrected packetized errors; and

    selectively adjusting impulse noise protection without interrupting the communication service by changing the impulse noise protection in a first manner if the number of uncorrected packetized errors is greater than an uncorrected packetized error threshold and changing the impulse noise protection in a second manner that differs from the first manner if the number of corrected packetized errors is less than a corrected packetized error threshold, wherein selectively adjusting the impulse noise protection comprises;

    selectively increasing the impulse noise protection if there are uncorrected packetized errors during a relevant observation time that is less than a threshold time value;

    selectively decreasing the impulse noise protection if there are no uncorrected packetized errors during the relevant observation time and if a number of corrected packetized errors is less than a threshold value during the relevant observation time; and

    leaving the impulse noise protection unchanged if there are no uncorrected packetized errors during the relevant observation time and if the number of corrected packetized errors is greater than or equal to the threshold value during the relevant observation time.
