Remote copy method and remote copy system
First Claim
1. A remote copy system comprising:
- a first storage system coupled to an information processing apparatus; and
a second storage system coupled to the first storage system to receive data from the first storage system;
wherein the first storage system has a first storage area in which the data sent from the information processing apparatus is written;
the second storage system has a logical address for a write destination of the data sent from the first storage system, and also has a second storage area in which data and update information, which should be written to the logical address, are stored when a storage area is not allocated to the logical address,wherein when the storage area is not allocated to the logical address, the second storage system is configured to copy the data and the update information from the second storage area to a third storage system so that the data of the first storage area is mirrored at a storage area of the third storage system and the second storage system maintains only a portion of the data of the first storage area.

Abstract
In a configuration in which it is necessary to transfer data from a first storage system to a third storage system through a storage system between the storage systems, there is a problem that it is inevitable to give an excess logical volume to a second storage system between the storage systems. A remote copy system includes first storage system that sends and receives data to and from an information processing apparatus, a second storage system, and a third storage system. The second storage system virtually has a second storage area in which the data should be written and has a third storage area in which the data written in the second storage area and update information concerning the data are written. Data sent from the first storage system is not written in the second storage area but is written in the third storage area as data and update information. The data and the update information written in the third storage area are read out from the third storage system.

3. A remote copy system comprising:
-
a first storage system coupled to an information processing apparatus, the first storage system including a first storage area in which the data from the information processing apparatus is written; and a second storage system coupled to the first storage system, the second storage system including a virtual volume defined by a logical address to be a write destination of data sent from the first storage system, the second storage system having a second storage area in which data for that logical address and update information concerning the data are written, and wherein data from the first storage system to be written in the logical volume of the second storage system, is written in the second storage area together with the update information of the data, instead of being written to an area indicated by the logical address, and wherein the second storage system copies the data and the update information from the second storage area to a third storage system so that the data of the first storage area is mirrored at a storage area of the third storage system and only a portion of the data of the first storage area is maintained at the second storage system. - View Dependent Claims (4)

5. A remote copy system comprising:
-
a first storage system coupled to a host computer and having a first controller configured to store data received from the host computer in at least one primary logical volume of the first storage system; a second storage system coupled to the first storage system and having a second controller configured to store data received from the first storage system with a virtualized logical volume and a journal logical volume of the second storage system; a third storage system coupled to the first storage system and the second storage system, the third storage system having a third controller configured to store the data of the primary logical volume at a designated secondary logical volume of the third storage system according to a copy-pair relationship between the primary logical volume and the secondary logical volume, wherein the remote copy system is configured to perform an initial copy operation in which data from the primary logical volume is transferred from the first controller to the third controller such that the secondary logical volume mirrors the primary logical volume, and wherein when the initial copy operation is complete, a second copy-pair relationship is established between the primary logical volume and the virtualized logical volume, and wherein data to be stored in the virtualized volume according to the second copy-pair relationship is diverted by the second controller to the journal logical volume such that the virtualized logical volume does not include a physical storage. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)

13. A method of performing a copy operation in a remote copy system comprising first, second, and third storage systems in data communication, the method comprising:
-
establishing a first copy-pair relationship in which a logical volume of the first storage system is designated as a primary logical volume and a logical volume of the third storage system is designated as a secondary logical volume; copying data in an initial copy operation from the primary logical volume to the secondary logical volume according to the first copy-pair relationship so that the secondary logical volume mirrors the data of the primary logical volume; when the initial copy operation is complete, establishing a second copy-pair relationship between the primary logical volume and a virtualized logical volume of the second storage system for which no physical data storage is provided; receiving data from the primary logical volume at the second storage system according to the second copy-pair relationship; and diverting the received data from the virtualized logical volume to a journal logical volume of the second storage system such that data directed to the virtualized volume is instead stored in the journal volume. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
