Method and apparatus for validation of sterilization process
First Claim
1. A method for verifying sterilization of components in a sterilization system using a low-energy electron beam comprising the steps of:
- determining a minimum sterilization dose which when applied to a sample of a component results in a desired sterility assurance level (SAL) of less than about 10−
3;
exposing a sample component and a plurality of indicators to the low-energy electron beam;
measuring a sterilization dose received at each indicator, at least one of the plurality of indicators providing a sterilization dose measurement indicative of the sterilization dose at the sample component;
determining a dose distribution of the sample component;
establishing a correlation between the sterilization dose at the sample component and the sterilization dose measured at least one of the plurality of indicators;
placing a component to be sterilized onto a component pallet;
attaching by a mechanism a holder containing a correlated indicator therein to the component pallet as a site to be used to indicate achievement of at least the minimum sterilization dose;
exposing the component and correlated indicator to the low-energy electron beam;
determining the sterilization dose at the indicator; and
ascertaining the efficacy of the sterilization dose achieved at the component based on the determined sterilization dose at the correlated indicator.

Abstract
An apparatus, system and method for verifying the achievement of a desired sterility assurance level (SAL) for components manipulated within a low-energy electron beam sterilization chamber. The components are preferably pre-sterilized and connected together in an assembly fashion which creates and maintains the sterility of the connection by subjecting the components to low-energy (less than 300 KeV) electron beam radiation. The verification is completed by measuring the sterilization dose delivered to a sensor, also known as a dosimeter, positioned within the sterilization process to simulate the components.

8. A system for verifying the sterility of components comprising:
-
a sterilization chamber; a pallet member configured to position a component within the sterilization chamber; a dosimeter holder having a plurality of dosimeters contained therein, the dosimeter holder detachably affixed to the pallet member by a mechanism and including a plurality of passages permitting radiation to reach the plurality of contained dosimeters; a low-energy sterilization source configured to deliver a sterilization dose to a component and a correlated dose to the dosimeter within the sterilization chamber, wherein the sterilization dose results in a desired sterility assurance level (“
SAL”
) of less than about 10−
3;a verification station located apart from the sterilization chamber at which the dosimeter holder is removed from the pallet member and the dosimeter holder is disassembled to gain access to the plurality of dosimeters for measuring the correlated dose absorbed by the plurality of dosimeters within the sterilization chamber; and wherein the sterilization chamber, the pallet member, the dosimeter holder, the low energy sterilization source, and the verification station are configured and arranged to enable the correlated dose to be determined by (i) exposing a sample component and the plurality of dosimeters to the low-energy sterilization source, (ii) measuring a sterilization dose received at each dosimeter, at least one of the plurality of dosimeters providing a sterilization dose measurement indicative of the sterilization dose at the sample component, (iii) determining a dose distribution of the sample component, and (iv) establishing a correlation between the sterilization dose at the sample component and the sterilization dose measured at the at least one of the plurality of dosimeters. - View Dependent Claims (9, 11)
