a cathode comprising a cathode active material;
at least one layer of a continuous polyvinyl alcohol separator film between the anode and the cathode; and
,an alkaline aqueous bulk electrolyte in fluid communication with the anode and the cathode;
wherein substantially all of the fluid communication is through the continuous polyvinyl alcohol separator film, and further wherein the continuous polyvinyl alcohol separator film has an Exclusion Value of at least 50%.
