Abstract

Disclosed is a method of charging a lithium-sulfur electrochemical cell wherein the lithium-sulfur cell comprises a cathode comprising an electroactive sulfur-containing material, an anode comprising lithium, and a nonaqueous electrolyte. Also disclosed are methods for determining charge termination when charging lithium-sulfur cells.

Claims

1. A method for terminating charging of a lithium-sulfur electrochemical cell wherein the method comprises:

(A) monitoring the cell voltage during charging;

(B) calculating the rate of change of voltage with specific charging capacity (dV/dQ); and

(C) terminating charging when dV/dQ is equal to or greater than 5 Vg/Ah; and

wherein the cell comprises;

(a) a cathode;

(b) an anode; and

(c) an electrolyte comprising;

(i) one or more solvents; and

(iii) one or more N-O additives.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the cathode comprises an electroactive sulfur-containing material and the anode comprises lithium.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrolyte is nonaqueous and each of the one or more solvents is nonaqueous.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrolyte is aqueous and one of the one or more solvents is aqueous.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the charge is terminated when dV/dQ is equal to or greater than about 10 Vg/Ah.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the charge is terminated when dV/dQ is in the range of about 5 to about 40 Vg/Ah.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the cell is charged at a constant current.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more N-O additives is selected from one or more of the group consisting of inorganic nitrates, inorganic nitrites, organic nitrates, organic nitrites, organic nitro compounds and organic N-O compounds.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the inorganic nitrate or nitrite is selected from one or more of the group consisting of lithium nitrate, potassium nitrate, cesium nitrate, barium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, lithium nitrite, potassium nitrite, cesium nitrite and ammonium nitrite.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein the organic nitrate is selected from one or more of the group consisting of dialkyl imidazolium nitrates, guanidinium nitrate, imidazolium nitrate and pyridinium nitrate.

The method of claim 8 wherein the organic nitrite, organic nitro compound or organic N-O compound is selected from one or more of the group consisting of ethyl nitrite, propyl nitrite, butyl nitrite, pentyl nitrite and octyl nitrite, nitromethane, nitropropane, nitrobenzene, dinitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, dinitrotoluene, nitropyridine, pyridine N-oxide, alkylpyridine N-oxides and tetramethyl piperidine N-oxyl (TEMPO).

12. The method of claim 1 wherein one of the one or more N-O additives is guanidinium nitrate.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the concentration of the one or more N-O additives is from about 0.02 m to 2.0 m.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the concentration of the one or more N-O additives is from about 0.1 m to 2.0 m.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrolyte further comprises one or more lithium salts.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the one or more lithium salts is selected from one or more of the group consisting of LiSCN, LiBr, LiI, LiClO₄, LiAsF₆, LiSO₃CF₃, LiSO₃CH₃, LiBF₄, LiB(Ph)₄, LiPF₆, LiC(SO₂CF₃)₃, and LiN(SO₂CF₃)₂.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the concentration of the one or more lithium salts is from about 0.2 m to about 2.0 m.

18. The method of claim 3 wherein the nonaqueous solvents comprise one or more selected from the group consisting of acyclic ethers, cyclic ethers, polyethers and sulfones.

19. The method of claim 2 wherein the electroactive sulfur-containing material comprises elemental sulfur.

20. The method of claim 2 wherein the anode comprises lithium metal.
