1. A method comprising:

  • transmitting a first orthogonal frequency division multiplexing pilot symbol having a fast Fourier transform size and a plurality of carrier frequencies that includes a first plurality of allowed carrier frequencies and a first plurality of forbidden carrier frequencies, wherein the first plurality of allowed carrier frequencies includes a first plurality of active carrier frequencies; and

transmitting a second orthogonal frequency division multiplexing pilot symbol having the fast Fourier transform size and the plurality of carrier frequencies, wherein the plurality of carrier frequencies includes a second plurality of allowed carrier frequencies and a second plurality of forbidden carrier frequencies, wherein the second plurality of allowed carrier frequencies includes a second plurality of active carrier frequencies, wherein the second plurality of allowed carrier frequencies is shifted by a predetermined frequency relative to the first plurality of allowed carrier frequencies, the second plurality of forbidden carrier frequencies is shifted by the predetermined frequency relative to the first plurality of forbidden carrier frequencies, and the second plurality of active carrier frequencies is shifted by the predetermined frequency relative to the first plurality of active carrier frequencies.
