Abstract

A method of capturing user control inputs includes providing a first navigation member slidably coupled on a housing portion of a portable computer and a stationary second navigation member external to and independent of the portable computer. An input card is provided that includes an optical navigation sensor and is configured with a size and a shape for deployment of the input card in a first releasably fixed arrangement relative to the first navigation member and a second movable arrangement relative to the stationary second navigation member. A first user control input is captured for controlling a function of the portable computer, via communication between the input card and the portable computer, based on relative motion between the optical navigation sensor of the input card and one of respective movable first navigation member and stationary second navigation member.

Claims

1. A method of capturing user control inputs, the method comprising:

providing a first navigation member slidably coupled on a housing portion of a portable computer and a stationary second navigation member external to and independent of the portable computer;

providing an input card including an optical navigation sensor for detecting relative motion and configuring the input card with a size and a shape for deployment of the input card in a first releasably fixed arrangement relative to the first navigation member and a second movable arrangement relative to the stationary second navigation member; and

capturing a first user control input for controlling a function of the portable computer, via communication between the input card and the portable computer, based on relative motion between the optical navigation sensor of the input card and one of respective movable first navigation member and stationary second navigation member,

wherein configuring the input card for deployment in the first releasably fixed arrangement comprises;

configuring the housing portion to include an input interface comprising the first navigation member and a support portion configured to releasably secure the input card relative to the housing of the portable computer to support the optical navigation sensor in an exposed position relative to first navigation member, and for slidable movement of the first navigation member relative to the support portion; and

removably slidably inserting the input card into a slot of support portion of the input interface to detect relative motion between first navigation member and the optical navigation sensor of the input card.

The method of claim 1 wherein removably slidably inserting the input card comprises releasably connecting a portion of the input card to a connector within the slot to establish direct wired communication between the input card and the portable computer, and to recharge a battery of the input card.

3. The method of claim 1, comprising:

removing the input card from the slot of the housing portion and positioning the input card into the second movable arrangement for fingertip-controlled slidable movement of the input card to detect relative motion between the optical navigation sensor of the input card and the stationary second navigation member for capturing the first user control input; and

wherein providing an input card comprises configuring the input card to include a wireless communication module for wirelessly communicating the first user control input to the portable computer.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the stationary second navigation surface comprises at least one of a mouse pad and a desktop surface.

The method of claim 3 wherein the first user control input corresponds to a positional function of a graphical user interface of the portable computer and a second user control input corresponds to at least one activation function to activate the function of the portable computer in association with the positional function;

and

capturing the second user control input via at least one of;

an input control panel of the input card; and

the input interface of the housing portion of the portable computer.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the positional function comprises at least one of scrolling a portion of a graphical user interface, dragging an object across the graphical user interface, and positioning a pointer at a location on the graphical user interface;

and

wherein the at least one activation function comprises activation, on a graphical user interface of the portable computer, of at least one of a scrolling function, a dragging function, a positioning function, an application software, and item selection from a menu.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein the input interface comprises a fingertip activatable sensor array adjacent the support portion of the input interface.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein providing an input card comprises arranging the input card to include a first side comprising an input control panel and a second side, opposite the first side, comprising the optical navigation sensor.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein providing an input card comprises configuring the second movable arrangement to include:

slidably inserting the input card into a releasably fixed position within a mouse shell and configuring the mouse shell to include;

a contact portion configured for slidable movement relative to the stationary second navigation surface; and

a recess configured to slidably receive the input card to position the optical navigation sensor for exposure to the stationary second navigation surface for detecting relative motion between the optical navigation sensor and the stationary second navigation surface for capturing the first user control input.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein configuring the input card comprises configuring the second movable arrangement to include:

directly placing the input card into slidable movable engagement relative to the stationary second navigation surface, without prior placement into the first releasably fixed arrangement, to enable the optical navigation sensor of the input card to detect relative motion between the optical navigation sensor and the stationary second navigation surface.

11. A portable computer comprising:

a display; and

a housing pivotally connected to the display and defining;

an upper portion defining an input interface including a support portion on which a first navigation member is slidably movable relative to the support portion,

wherein the support portion includes a slot configured to removably slidably receive an optical navigation card including an optical navigation sensor for detecting relative motion into a releasably fixed position within the slot to expose the optical navigation card to detect relative motion between the first navigation member and the optical navigation card to capture a first user control input for controlling a function associated with the portable computer.

12. The portable computer of claim 11 wherein the input interface of the housing portion comprises:

a retaining mechanism configured to retain the first navigation member into slidable movement relative to the support portion of the input interface.

13. The portable computer of claim 12 wherein the retaining mechanism comprises:

a magnetic coupling mechanism configured to magnetically couple the first navigation member relative to the support portion.

14. The portable computer of claim 13 wherein the magnetic coupling mechanism comprises a magnetic member defining a portion of the first navigation member and the support portion including a ferrous member.

15. The portable computer of claim 11 wherein the housing comprises a connector configured for releasable connection, via the slot in the side portion of the housing, to the optical navigation card for recharging a power supply of the optical navigation card.

16. The portable computer of claim 11, comprising:

a wireless communication module configured to wirelessly communicate with the optical navigation card to capture the first user control input.

17. The portable computer of claim 11, comprising a system including the portable computer and the optical navigation card, the optical navigation card comprising:

a first side including the optical navigation sensor; and

a second side opposite the first side having a multi-button control module configured to capture a second user control input; and

a wireless communication module configured to wirelessly communicate the first user control input and the second user control input to the portable computer.

18. The portable computer of claim 17 wherein the multi-button control module of the optical navigation card comprises an elongate array of buttons configured to capture the second control input and including a scroll button, a left click button, and a right click button.

19. The portable computer of claim 17 wherein the optical navigation card comprises at least one of:

a biometric identifier mechanism on the first side of the optical navigation card configured, via the optical navigation sensor, to uniquely identify an individual to grant access to use of the portable computer; and

a wireless remote control mechanism, on the first side of the optical navigation card, configured, via the optical navigation sensor, to control a video display associated with the portable computer.

20. A method of capturing user control inputs, the method comprising:

removably inserting a user input member within a slot of a housing of a computer to releasably secure the user input member in a releasably fixed position within an input pad adjacent an upper surface of the housing of the computer;

positioning a slider for slidable movement over the input pad of the upper surface of the housing of the computer to expose a first navigation surface on the slider to an optical navigation sensor of the user input member; and

capturing a first user control input for controlling a function of the computer, via communication between the user input member and the computer, based on detection of relative motion between the first navigation surface of the slider relative to the optical navigation sensor of the user input member.

21. The method of claim 20 further comprising:

capturing a second user control input via at least one control input button on a surface of the housing adjacent the input pad, the second user control comprising at least one of a click function and a scrolling function.

22. The method of claim 20, comprising:

removing, prior to capturing the first user control input, the user input member from the slot of the housing of the computer and placing the user input member on a stationary second navigation surface independent of the housing of the computer; and

capturing the first user control input for controlling the function of the computer, via wireless communication between the user input member and the computer, based on slidable movement of the user input member relative to the stationary second navigation surface.

23. The method of claim 20, comprising:

removing, prior to capturing the first user control input, the user input member from the slot of the housing of the computer and positioning a fingertip as a second navigation surface relative to the optical navigation sensor of the user input member; and

capturing the first user control input for controlling the first function of the computer, via wireless communication between the user input member and the computer, based on slidable movement of the fingertip as the second navigation surface relative to the optical navigation sensor of user input member.

The method of claim 20 wherein the user input member comprises a first side and a second side opposite the first side, wherein the optical navigation sensor is disposed on the first side and an input control panel is disposed on the second side, and configuring the input control panel to capture a second user control input.

The method of claim 24 wherein capturing the second user control input comprises fingertip-activation of a scrolling function associated with a graphical user interface of the computer and capturing the first user control input comprises performing scrolling on the graphical user interface via the fingertip-activated scrolling function.

26. The method of claim 20 wherein positioning the slider for slidably movement comprises:

coupling the slider relative to the input pad to retain the slider against the input pad.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein coupling the slider comprises:

providing a first magnetic component and a second magnetically responsive component; and

configuring the slider to include at least one of the first magnetic component and the second magnetically responsive component and configuring the input pad to include at least one of the respective first magnetic component and the second magnetically responsive component.
