1. An intramedullary fixation device comprising:
- an intramedullary nail having an opening for receiving a screw, the opening comprising a first portion on a first side of a cannulation through the intramedullary nail and a second portion on an opposing side of the cannulation, the first portion of the opening comprising an intermittent groove; and
an insert incorporated into the first portion of the opening, the insert comprising a hollow portion and a circumferential rib around an outer surface of the insert, the circumferential rib interacting with the intermittent groove of the first portion of the opening to secure the insert within the opening of the intramedullary nail and prevent the insert from moving and rotating during insertion of the screw into the opening.

12. An intramedullary fixation device comprising:

an intramedullary nail having an opening for receiving a screw, the opening comprising a first portion on a medial side of the intramedullary nail and a second portion on a lateral side of the intramedullary nail, the first portion of the opening comprising an intermittent groove defining a plurality of substantially sharp points separated by insert retaining portions; and an insert that engages the intermittent groove, the insert comprising a hollow portion and a circumferential rib encircling an outer surface of the insert, wherein the substantially sharp points of the intermittent groove engage the circumferential rib to rotationally stabilize the insert relative to the opening and wherein the insert retaining portions receive portions of the circumferential rib to retain the insert within the opening; wherein, when the screw is inserted into the opening, the insert helps stabilize the screw in a fixed position relative to the intramedullary nail.

an intramedullary nail having an opening for receiving a fastener, the opening comprising a first portion on a medial side of the intramedullary nail and a second portion on a lateral side of the intramedullary nail, the first portion of the opening comprising an intermittent groove; and an insert that engages the intermittent groove, the insert comprising a hollow portion and a circumferential rib encircling an outer surface of the insert, wherein the intermittent groove engages the circumferential rib to rotationally stabilize the insert relative to the opening and receives portions of the circumferential rib to retain the insert within the opening. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16)
