1. A method of obtaining a gene product comprising:
- (i) forming an emulsion comprising a surfactant, a hydrophobic phase and a hydrophilic phase, the hydrophilic phase comprising a plurality of microcapsules containing a functional in vitro eukaryotic expression system, wherein the surfactant is a chemically inert silicone-based surfactant;
(ii) allowing the gene product to be expressed by the expression system; and
, optionally,(iii) purifying the gene product.
