Abstract

Methods of treating a medical condition include applying at least one stimulus to a motor cortex within a brain of a patient with an implanted system control unit in accordance with one or more stimulation parameters. Systems for treating a medical condition include a system control unit implanted within the patient that is configured to apply at least one stimulus to a motor cortex within a brain of a patient in accordance with one or more stimulation parameters.

Claims

1. A method of treating a patient with a headache using a microstimulator implanted within a hole formed in a skull of said patient, said microstimulator comprising electrical stimulation circuitry, a capsule containing said electrical stimulation circuitry, and a stimulation electrode disposed on an external surface of said capsule, said method comprising:

generating a stimulus in accordance with one or more stimulation parameters using said electrical stimulation circuitry; and

extradurally applying said stimulus via said stimulation electrode to a motor cortex within a brain of said patient, thereby treating said headache.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said one or more stimulation parameters includes one or more of a frequency, a pulse width, a duty cycle, a burst pattern, and an amplitude.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising sensing at least one indicator related to said headache and using said at least one sensed indicator to adjust said stimulation parameters.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said hole has a size substantially equal to a size of said microstimulator.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising implanting said microstimulator within said hole of said patient.

6. The method of claim 1, said microstimulator is affixed within said hole using an adhesive.

The method of claim 1, wherein said microstimulator comprises an indifferent electrode disposed on said external surface of said capsule, and said microstimulator is implanted within said hole, such that said stimulation electrode is adjacent said motor cortex and said indifferent electrode is adjacent an outer surface of said skull.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said microstimulator comprises a power source contained within said capsule, said power source supplying energy to said electrical stimulation circuitry.

The method of claim 1, wherein said microstimulator comprises a programmable memory contained within said capsule, where in said programmable memory stores said one or more stimulation parameters, the method further comprising wirelessly transmitting a command from an external control device to said microstimulator that adjusts said stored one or more stimulation parameters.

10. A method of treating a patient with a headache using a plurality of microstimulators and a plurality of stimulation electrodes, each of said microstimulators comprising electrical stimulation circuitry configured to be electrically coupled to a respective one of said stimulation electrodes, programmable memory storing one or more stimulation parameters, and a capsule containing said electrical stimulation circuitry and said programmable memory, said method comprising:

implanting microstimulators and said stimulation electrodes within said patient via different holes in the skull of said patient;

generating stimuli in accordance with one or more stimulation parameters using said electrical stimulation circuitry of said microstimulators;

applying said stimuli via said stimulation electrodes to a motor cortex within a brain of said patient, thereby treating said headache; and

wirelessly transmitting commands from an external control device to each of said microstimulators that adjusts said stored one or more stimulation parameters.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said one or more stimulation parameters includes one or more of a frequency, a pulse width, a duty cycle, a burst pattern, and an amplitude.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising sensing at least one indicator related to said headache and using said at least one sensed indicator to adjust said stimulation parameters.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein each of said holes has a size substantially equal to a size of each of said microstimulators.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein said microstimulator comprises a power source contained within said capsule, said power source supplying energy to said electrical stimulation circuitry.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein each of at least one of said stimulation electrodes is carried on a lead coupled to each of at least one of said microstimulators.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein at least one of said stimulation electrodes is respectively disposed on a capsule of at least one of said microstimulators.

The method of claim 16, wherein said at least said microstimulator comprises an indifferent electrode disposed on said external surface of said capsule of said at least one microstimulator, and said at least one microstimulator is implanted within said respective hole, such that said at least one stimulation electrode is adjacent said motor cortex and said indifferent electrode is adjacent an outer surface of said skull.
