Abstract

This document discusses trajectory guides that include an instrument guide with at least one lumen angled with respect to an orthogonal or other through-axis. In one example, patterned lumens on the instrument guide provide a mirror image pattern of trajectory axes intersecting a target plane. In another example, height adjustment of the instrument guide extends these or other targeting techniques to a three-dimensional volume. This document also describes a method of manufacturing such an instrument guide, which is also applicable to manufacturing an instrument guide providing parallel lumens.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

disposing at least one tube in a desired orientation within at least a portion of a bushing;

introducing a flowable agent about the tube within at least a portion of the bushing;

allowing the flowable agent to harden; and

associating the bushing and the agent once the agent has hardened with an instrument base; and

guiding an instrument through the agent once the agent has hardened.

2. The method of claim 1, in which the disposing at least one tube comprises:

disposing at least one pin in the desired orientation within at least a portion of the bushing; and

placing at least one tube over the respective at least one pin.

3. The method of claim 2, further including removing the at least one pin after allowing the flowable agent to harden.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein removing the at least one pin includes forming a lumen within the agent once the agent has hardened.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

guiding the instrument through the lumen formed when the pin is removed from the agent once the agent has hardened.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

positioning the instrument base relative to a subject; and

moving the agent once the agent has hardened relative to the subject with the instrument base with a rotational joint and an arcuate sliding joint with which the agent is associated.

7. The method of claim 1, in which the allowing the agent to harden includes allowing the agent to harden into a plug that includes the at least one tube, wherein the plug is configured to be used as an instrument guide for providing a trajectory for an instrument in a medical procedure.

8. A method comprising:

positioning a first pin within a bushing;

positioning a first tube over the first pin;

filling the bushing with a flowable material, including filling an area around the first tube within the bushing;

allowing the flowable material to form a plug;

holding the first tube with the plug;

associating the plug with an instrument base; and

guiding an instrument with the first tube in the plug.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

positioning a second tube within the bushing relative to the first tube;

wherein filling the bushing includes filling the area between the first tube and the second tube;

wherein the plug includes the first tube and the second tube;

wherein guiding an instrument includes guiding a first instrument through the first tube and a second instrument through the second tube.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein guiding the first instrument and the second instrument includes:

guiding a first instrument in the first tube;

removing the first instrument from the first tube; and

guiding the first instrument in the second tube.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

holding the first tube relative to the bushing with the plug.

12. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

holding the first tube relative to the bushing with the plug.

13. A method comprising:

inserting a bushing into a fixture having a fixture base;

inserting a pin inside the bushing and into an appropriately oriented receptacle in the base;

slipping a tube over the inserted pin;

filling the interstices around the tube with a flowable hardenable agent;

allowing the flowable hardenable agent to harden into a plug;

carrying the tube with the plug;

forming an instrument guide by holding the tube relative to the bushing with the plug; and

associating the bushing and the agent once the agent has hardened with an instrument base; and

guiding an instrument through the agent once the agent has hardened.

14. The method of claim 13,

wherein inserting a pin includes, inserting a first pin having a longitudinal axis at an angle to a longitudinal axis of a second pin;

wherein slipping a tube over the inserted pin includes, slipping a first tube over the first pin and a second tube over the second pin;

wherein filling the interstices around the tube includes, filling the interstices between the first tube and the second tube.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the angle is an acute angle or an obtuse angle.

16. The method of claim 13,

wherein the bushing is a hollow cylinder including a lumen and a ring-like circumferential lip.

17. The method of claim 13,

wherein the bushing defines the outer circumferential shape of the instrument guide.

18. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

fixing the bushing into the fixture, where the fixture includes a circular fixture base and a circumferential seating ring rising orthogonally outward from the circular base;

wherein the ring snugly receives the bushing.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the pin defines a corresponding lumen in the instrument guide.

20. The method of claim 13, wherein the tube is a thin metal tube having a wall thickness of about 0.003 inches.

21. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

moving the formed instrument guide relative to a subject with a rotational joint and an arcuate sliding joint of the instrument base.
