1. An antenna operative with a power amplifier, the antenna comprising:
- an active element for transmitting signals, supplied by the power amplifier, the power amplifier having an output power responsive to a power control signal, a power amplifier output impedance variable according to the output power;
an antenna impedance controller responsive to the power control signal, or to the power amplifier output power, or to the power amplifier output impedance; and
controllable structural elements controllable by the antenna impedance controller, for determining the antenna input impedance and therefore the impedance into which the power amplifier operates to increase the power amplifier efficiency.

Abstract
An antenna for a communications device having configurable elements controlled to modify an antenna impedance and/or an antenna resonant frequency to improve performance of the communications device. The antenna impedance is controlled to substantially match to an output impedance of a power amplifier that supplies the antenna with a signal for transmission. The antenna resonant frequency is controlled to overcome the effects of various operating conditions that can detune the antenna or in response to an operable frequency band.
