Abstract

Apparatus and method for purchasing cash from an ATM. The ATM has a unique identifier visibly located thereon. A customer phone includes a camera and a programmable memory. The camera can be used to capture an image of the ATM'"'"'s identifier. The memory includes customer account data. A customer uses their phone to establish wireless communication with a transaction host. The customer can transmit to the host a request for cash from the ATM. The request includes the account data and the image. The host can use the account data in payment for the requested cash. The host uses the image to identify the particular ATM associated with the request. After payment, the host causes the identified ATM to dispense the requested cash.

Claims

1. A method of using a portable wireless phone to conduct a cardless customer transaction with a transaction system including networked fund dispensing automated banking machines, wherein the phone is usable by a customer involved in the customer transaction, wherein the customer transaction includes operation of one machine of the automated banking machines to dispense funds to the customer, wherein the using of the phone enables the entire customer transaction to be conducted sans a customer card and sans physical contact between the customer and the one machine, wherein the using of the phone includes:

(a) operating the phone to wirelessly initiate the customer transaction with the transaction system;

(b) operating the phone to wirelessly transmit a funds request to the transaction system, wherein the funds request includes an account number identifier and specifies an amount of funds requested to be dispensed; and

(c) operating the phone to wirelessly receive receipt data originating from the transaction system, wherein the receipt data is associated with the amount of funds specified in step (b).

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the phone includes memory comprising card account data, wherein the account number identifier comprises the card account data, wherein step (b) includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit the card account data,

wherein the phone includes a biometric reader, and further comprising

(d) operating the biometric reader to read biometric information from the customer;

wherein step (b) further includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit the biometric information read in step (d) to the transaction system.

3. The method according to claim 2 wherein the transaction system includes a wireless card data reading device and a wireless biometric data reading device, and further comprising

(e) operating the wireless card data reading device to receive and interpret the card account data transmitted in step (b);

(f) operating the wireless biometric data reading device to receive and interpret the biometric information transmitted in step (b);

(g) operating the transaction system to authorize the customer to conduct the customer transaction responsive to both the interpretation in step (e) and the interpretation in step (f).

The method according to claim 1 wherein the funds request comprises a check transaction request involving a check having a check amount and at least one signature, wherein step (b) includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit at least one check image corresponding to at least one side of the check to the transaction system, wherein step (b) further includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit an electronic signature to the transaction system, wherein the funds request corresponds to a cash dispense request in exchange for the at least one check image and the electronic signature, and further comprising

(d) operating the phone to cause an amount of funds corresponding to the check amount to be dispensed from the one machine.

5. The method according to claim 1 wherein the funds request comprises a cash withdrawal transaction request, wherein step (b) includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit a cash withdrawal transaction request to the transaction system.

6. The method according to claim 5 wherein step (c) includes operating the phone to wirelessly receive transaction receipt data associated with the cash withdrawal transaction request.

7. The method according to claim 6 and further comprising

(d) operating the phone to cause the amount of funds specified in step (b) to be dispensed from the one machine.

8. The method according to claim 1 wherein the receipt data comprises a transaction code, wherein step (c) includes operating the phone to wirelessly receive a transaction code associated with the amount of funds specified in step (b).

9. The method according to claim 8 and further comprising

(d) operating the phone to wirelessly transmit the transaction code from the phone, wherein the transmission causes the amount of funds specified in step (b) to be dispensed from the one machine.

The method according to claim 9 wherein the funds request comprises a cash withdrawal transaction request, wherein step (b) includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit a cash withdrawal transaction request to the transaction system, wherein the cash withdrawal transaction request specifies an amount of cash requested to be dispensed, and wherein step (d) includes operating the phone to transmit the transaction code to cause the amount of cash specified in step (b) to be dispensed from the one machine.

11. The method according to claim 9 wherein in steps (a)-(c) the phone is remotely located from the one machine, and wherein in step (d) the phone is located adjacent the one machine.

12. The method according to claim 11 wherein step (c) occurs on a first date, and wherein step (d) occurs on a date later than the first date.

13. The method according to claim 1 wherein the funds request comprises plural messages, wherein step (b) includes operating the phone to transmit plural messages to the transaction system in transmitting the funds request to the transaction system.

14. A method of using a portable wireless phone to conduct a customer transaction with a transaction system including networked fund dispensing automated banking machines, wherein the phone is usable by a customer involved in the customer transaction, wherein the customer transaction includes operation of one machine of the automated banking machines to dispense funds to the customer, wherein the using of the phone enables the entire customer transaction to be conducted sans customer input to the one machine, wherein the using of the phone includes:

(a) operating the phone to wirelessly initiate the customer transaction with the transaction system;

(b) operating the phone to wirelessly transmit in at least one message to the transaction system, a funds request that includes an account number identifier and an amount of funds requested to be dispensed; and

(c) operating the phone to cause the amount of funds requested in step (b) to be dispensed from the one machine.

The method according to claim 14 wherein the funds request comprises a cash withdrawal transaction request, wherein step (b) includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit the cash withdrawal transaction request to the transaction system, wherein the cash withdrawal transaction request specifies an amount of cash to be dispensed, and wherein step (c) includes operating the phone to cause the amount of cash specified in step (b) to be dispensed from the one machine.

16. The method according to claim 15 and further comprising

(d) operating the phone to wirelessly receive transaction receipt data originating from the transaction system, wherein the transaction receipt data corresponds to the amount of cash specified in step (b).

17. The method according to claim 14 wherein in step (b) the funds request includes identifier data which uniquely identifies the one machine.

18. The method according to claim 14 wherein the funds request comprises a check transaction request involving a check, wherein the check transaction request includes a check amount, wherein step (b) includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit the check amount to the transaction system, and wherein step (c) includes operating the phone to cause an amount of funds corresponding to the check amount to be dispensed from the one machine.

19. The method according to claim 18 wherein step (b) includes operating the phone to wirelessly transmit to the transaction system, at least one check image corresponding to at least one side of the check.

20. A method of using a customer-operated portable hand-held wireless communication device to conduct an entire customer transaction with a transaction system including networked automated banking machines, wherein at least one machine of the automated banking machines includes a cash dispenser, and wherein the customer transaction includes operation of the at least one machine, wherein the using of the device includes:

(a) operating the device to wirelessly initiate the customer transaction with the transaction system;

(b) operating the device to wirelessly transmit data including an account number identifier to the transaction system;

(c) operating the device to wirelessly transmit a customer transaction request to the transaction system, wherein the request is associated with allocation of money involving an account corresponding to the account number identifier; and

(d) operating the device to wirelessly receive data from the transaction system.
