1. A method for representing transmission of an optical signal through an optical system having frequency-dependent polarization effects, the method comprising:

  • inputting into a controller information for a model of the frequency-dependent polarization effects in the optical system, wherein the frequency-dependent polarization effects cause wavelength dependent changes in the state of polarization (SOP) of the optical signal;

    spatially dispersing frequency components of the optical signal on at least one spatial light modulator (SLM); and

    using the controller to independently adjust the polarization transfer matrix of multiple regions of the at least one SLM based on the model and the inputted information to represent the optical signal transmission.
