Abstract

Enabling a recipient to control presentation of an audio identifier informing the recipient of an arrival of a digital communication from a sender in a communication session includes receiving a digital communication from a sender directed to a recipient. A sender-designated first audio identifier or sender-related information that identifies the sender to the recipient is accessed upon arrival of the digital communication. The first audio identifier or sender-related information is presented to the recipient contemporaneous with receipt of the digital communication. The recipient is able to specify, upon presentation of the first audio identifier or sender-related information, whether to enable subsequent presentation of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with receipt of a future digital communication from the sender.

Claims

1. A method for enabling a recipient to control presentation of an audio identifier informing the recipient of an arrival of a digital communication from a sender in a communication session, the method comprising:

receiving a first digital communication from a sender directed to a recipient;

accessing, upon receipt of the first digital communication, a sender-designated first audio identifier that identifies the sender to the recipient or sender-related information that identifies the sender to the recipient;

presenting, to the recipient and contemporaneous with receipt of the first digital communication, the first audio identifier or sender-related information;

enabling the recipient to select, upon presentation of the first audio identifier or sender-related information, an option from a set of communication preference options for handling future communications received from the sender, the set of communication preference options including;

(1) a first option selectable to accept a future digital communication from the sender and to enable use of the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication from the sender, and (2) a second option selectable to accept the future digital communication from the sender but to reject use of the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication;

storing a communication preference corresponding to the selected option in a data store;

receiving, subsequent to receipt of the first digital communication, a second digital communication from the sender directed to the recipient;

accessing, upon receipt of the second digital communication, the communication preference from the data store;

enabling the recipient to perceive message contents of the second digital communication;

conditioned on the communication preference corresponding to the first option, enabling perception by the recipient of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with perception of the message contents of the second digital communication; and

conditioned on the communication preference corresponding to the second option, blocking the perception by the recipient of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with perception of the message contents of the second digital communication,

wherein the set of communication preference options further includes a third option selectable to accept a future digital communication from the sender and use a second audio identifier that differs from the first audio identifier in addition to the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication from the sender.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second audio identifier is designated by the sender.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the second audio identifier is designated by the recipient.

The method of claim 1, wherein enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options includes enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options upon receipt of a digital communication that is the first communication received from the sender in a communication session between the recipient and the sender.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options includes enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options each time a digital communication is received from the sender.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options further comprises enabling the recipient to specify how the first audio identifier will be presented upon receipt of each future digital communication from the sender.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the recipient is made able to specify how the first audio identifier will be presented upon receipt of each future digital communication from the sender in the communication session between the recipient and the sender.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising enabling the recipient to once again select an option from the set of communication preference options conditioned on whether the first audio identifier is changed by the sender.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising enabling the recipient to once again select an option from the set of communication preference options irrespective of receipt of future digital communications from the sender.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting the first audio identifier or sender-related information comprises presenting the first audio identifier or sender-related information in response to receipt of the first digital communication.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein accessing the first audio identifier comprises receiving the first audio identifier with the first digital communication.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein accessing the first audio identifier comprises receiving a pointer to a data store storing the first audio identifier and accessing the data store using the pointer to retrieve the first audio identifier.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the pointer is a Universal Resource Locator.

69. The method of claim 1, wherein the first digital communication is an instant message.

70. The method of claim 1, wherein the first digital communication is an e-mail.

71. The method of claim 1, wherein the first digital communication is a voice mail.

72. The method of claim 1, wherein the sender-designated first audio identifier that identifies the sender to the recipient comprises an audio identifier designated by the sender as indicative of an identity of the sender.

75. The method of claim 1, wherein the recipient and sender are users.

14. A method for controlling the presentation of an audio identifier informing a recipient of an arrival of a digital communication from a sender in a communication session, the method comprising:

receiving a first digital communication from a sender directed to a recipient, the first digital communication being associated with a first audio identifier;

upon receipt of the first digital communication by the recipient, accessing a sender-designated first audio identifier that identifies the sender to the recipient or sender-related information that identifies the sender to the recipient;

enabling the recipient to select an option from a set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier, the set of communication preference options including;

(1) a first option selectable to accept a future digital communication from the sender and to enable use of the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication from the sender, and (2) a second option selectable to accept the future digital communication from the sender but to reject use of the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication;

storing a communication preference corresponding to the selected option in a data store;

receiving, subsequent to receipt of the first digital communication, a second digital communication from the sender directed to the recipient;

accessing, upon receipt of the second digital communication, the communication preference from the data store;

enabling the recipient to perceive message contents of the second digital communication;

conditioned on the communication preference corresponding to the first option, enabling perception by the recipient of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with perception of the message contents of the second digital communication; and

conditioned on the communication preference corresponding to the second option, blocking the perception by the recipient of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with perception of the message contents of the second digital communication,

wherein the set of communication preference options further includes a third option selectable to accent a future digital communication from the sender and use a second audio identifier that differs from the first audio identifier in addition to the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication from the sender.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the second audio identifier is designated by the sender.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the second audio identifier is designated by the recipient.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier includes enabling the recipient to specify whether to enable presentation of the first audio identifier upon receipt of a digital communication that is the first communication received from the sender in a communication session between the recipient and the sender.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier includes enabling the recipient to select an option to enable presentation of the first audio identifier each time a digital communication is received from the sender.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options further comprises enabling the recipient to specify how the first audio identifier will be presented upon receipt of each future digital communication from the sender.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the recipient is made able to specify how the first audio identifier will be presented upon receipt of each future digital communication from the sender in the communication session between the recipient and the sender.

21. The method of claim 14, further comprising enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to specify that presentation of the first audio identifier will be conditioned on whether the first audio identifier is changed by the sender.

22. The method of claim 14, further comprising enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to specify that presentation of the first audio identifier will occur irrespective of receipt of future digital communications from the sender.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein enabling the recipient to control presentation of the first audio identifier includes presenting the first audio identifier or sender-related information in response to receipt of the first digital communication.

24. The method of claim 14, wherein accessing the first audio identifier comprises receiving the first audio identifier with the first digital communication.

25. The method of claim 14, wherein accessing the first audio identifier comprises receiving a pointer to a data store storing the first audio identifier and accessing the data store using the pointer to retrieve the first audio identifier.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the pointer is a Universal Resource Locator.

27. The method of claim 14, wherein enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier includes enabling the recipient to choose to perceive at least a portion of the first audio identifier prior to enabling the recipient to choose whether the first audio identifier will be presented.

28. The method of claim 14, further including enabling the recipient to control disposition of the first digital communication.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein enabling the recipient to select from a set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier and enabling the recipient to control disposition of the first digital communication comprises enabling the recipient to select from among one or more options to react to the received first digital communication.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the options are presented to the recipient in a user interface upon receipt of the first digital communication.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein the options include an option selectable to perceive the first digital communication and perceive the second audio identifier in addition to the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the first digital communication.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the second audio identifier is different than the first audio identifier and is designated by the sender.

33. The method of claim 31, wherein the second audio identifier is different than the first audio identifier and is designated by the recipient.

34. The method of claim 29, wherein the options include an option selectable to not perceive any audio identifier.

35. The method of claim 29, wherein the options include an option selectable to not perceive the first digital communication.

36. The method of claim 14, wherein the first digital communication is an instant message.

37. The method of claim 14, wherein the first digital communication is an e-mail.

38. The method of claim 14, wherein the first digital communication is a voice mail.

39. The method of claim 14, wherein the first audio identifier is a spoken version of a user identifier of the sender.

40. The method of claim 14, wherein the sender comprises a caller and the first digital communication comprises a phone call and wherein:

receiving a first digital communication comprises receiving the phone call directed to the recipient; and

enabling the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier comprises enabling the recipient to select an option to accept presentation of the first audio identifier in addition to or as a replacement of a ring tone for the phone call.

73. The method of claim 14, wherein the sender-designated first audio identifier that identifies the sender to the recipient comprises an audio identifier designated by the sender as indicative of an identity of the sender.

76. The method of claim 14, wherein the recipient and sender are users.

41. A computer system for controlling the presentation of an audio identifier informing a recipient of an arrival of a digital communication from a sender in a communication session, the computer system comprising:

a data store configured to store a sender-designated first audio identifier that identifies the sender to the recipient; and

a digital communication processor configured to;

receive a first digital communication from the sender directed to a recipient,

upon receipt of the first digital communication by the recipient, access the first audio identifier from the data store;

enable the recipient to select an option from a set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier, the set of communication preference options including;

(1) a first option selectable to accept a future digital communication from the sender and to enable use of the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication from the sender, and (2) a second option selectable to accept the future digital communication from the sender but to reject use of the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication,

store a communication preference corresponding to the selected option in the data store,

receive, subsequent to receipt of the first digital communication, a second digital communication from the sender directed to the recipient;

access, upon receipt of the second digital communication, the communication preference from the data store;

enable the recipient to perceive message contents of the second digital communication;

conditioned on the communication preference corresponding to the first option, enable perception by the recipient of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with perception of the message contents of the second digital communication; and

conditioned on the communication preference corresponding to the second option, block the perception by the recipient of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with perception of the message contents of the second digital communications,

wherein the set of communication preference options further includes a third option selectable to accept a future digital communication from the sender and use a second audio identifier that differs from the first audio identifier in addition to the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication from the sender.

42. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the second audio identifier is designated by the sender.

43. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the second audio identifier is designated by the recipient.

44. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the digital communication processor is configured to enable the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier by enabling the recipient to specify whether to enable presentation of the first audio identifier upon receipt of a digital communication that is the first communication received from the sender in a communication session between the recipient and the sender.

45. The computer system of claim 44, wherein the digital communication processor is configured to enable the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier by enabling the recipient to select an option to enable presentation of the first audio identifier each time a digital communication is received from the sender.

46. The computer system of claim 44, wherein the digital communication processor is further configured to enable the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to specify how the first audio identifier will be presented upon receipt of each future digital communication from the sender.

47. The computer system of claim 46, wherein the digital communication processor is configured to enable the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options specify how the first audio identifier will be presented upon receipt of each future digital communication from the sender in the communication session between the recipient and the sender.

48. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the digital communication processor is further configured to enable the recipient select an option from the set of communication preference options to specify that the recipient should again be prompted to accept or reject use the first audio identifier in the future conditioned on the first audio identifier being changed by the sender.

49. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the digital communication processor is further configured to enable the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to specify that the recipient need not be prompted to accept or reject the first audio identifier again in the future irrespective of receipt of future digital communications from the sender.

50. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the digital communication processor is configured to enable the recipient to control presentation of the first audio identifier by presenting the first audio identifier or sender-related information in response to receipt of the first digital communication.

51. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the digital communication is configured to access the first audio identifier by receiving the first audio identifier with the first digital communication.

52. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the digital communication processor is configured to access the first audio identifier by receiving a pointer to a data store storing the first audio identifier and accessing the data store using the pointer to retrieve the first audio identifier.

53. The computer system of claim 52, wherein the pointer is a Universal Resource Locator.

54. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the digital communication processor is configured to enable the recipient select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier by enabling the recipient to choose to perceive at least a portion of the first audio identifier prior to enabling the recipient to choose whether the first audio identifier will be presented.

55. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the digital communication processor is further configured to enable the recipient to control disposition of the first digital communication.

56. The computer system of claim 55, wherein the digital communication processor is further configured to enable the recipient select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier and presentation of the first digital communication by enabling the recipient to select from among one or more options to react to the received first digital communication.

57. The computer system of claim 56, wherein the options are presented to the recipient in a user interface upon receipt of the first digital communication.

58. The computer system of claim 56, wherein the options include an option selectable to perceive the first digital communication and perceive the second audio identifier in addition to the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the first digital communication.

59. The computer system of claim 58, wherein the second audio identifier is different than the first audio identifier and is designated by the sender.

60. The computer system of claim 58, wherein the second audio identifier is different than the first audio identifier and is designated by the recipient.

61. The computer system of claim 56, wherein the options include an option selectable to not perceive any audio identifier.

62. The computer system of claim 56, wherein the options include an option selectable to not perceive the first digital communication.

63. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the first digital communication is an instant message.

64. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the first digital communication is an e-mail.

65. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the first digital communication is a voice mail.

66. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the first audio identifier is a spoken version of a user identifier of the sender.

67. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the sender comprises a caller and the digital communication comprises a phone call and wherein:

the digital communication processor is configured to;

receive a first digital communication by receiving the phone call directed to the recipient; and

enable the recipient to select an option from the set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier by enabling the recipient to select an option to accept presentation of the first audio identifier in addition to or as a replacement of a ring tone for the phone call.

74. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the sender-designated first audio identifier that identifies the sender to the recipient comprises an audio identifier designated by the sender as indicative of an identity of the sender.

77. The computer system of claim 41, wherein the recipient and sender are users.

68. An apparatus for controlling the presentation of an audio identifier informing a recipient of an arrival of a digital communication from a sender in a communication session, the apparatus including one or more computer processing devices and comprising:

means for receiving a first digital communication from a sender directed to a recipient, the first digital communication being associated with a first audio identifier;

means for accessing a sender-designated first audio identifier that identifies the sender to the recipient or sender-related information that identifies the sender to the recipient upon arrival of the first digital communication from the sender to the recipient;

means for enabling the recipient to select an option from a set of communication preference options to control presentation of the first audio identifier, the set of communication preference options including;

(1) a first option selectable to accept a future digital communication from the sender and to enable use of the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication from the sender, and (2) a second option selectable to accept the future digital communication from the sender but to reject use of the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication;

means for storing a communication preference corresponding to the selected option in a data store;

means for receiving, subsequent to receipt of the first digital communication, a second digital communication from the sender directed to the recipient;

means for accessing, upon receipt of the second digital communication, the communication preference from the data store;

means for enabling the recipient to perceive message contents of the second digital communication;

means for, conditioned on the communication preference corresponding to the first option, enabling perception by the recipient of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with perception of the message contents of the second digital communication; and

means for, conditioned on the communication preference corresponding to the second option, blocking the perception by the recipient of the first audio identifier prior to or concurrent with perception of the message contents of the second digital communication,

wherein the set of communication preference options further includes a third option selectable to accept a future digital communication from the sender and use a second audio identifier that differs from the first audio identifier in addition to the first audio identifier to inform the recipient of arrival of the future digital communication from the sender.
