1. A touch panel device comprising:

  • a substrate including a rectangular detection range on which a first pair of two opposing sides, which are parallel to each other, and a second pair of two opposing sides, which are parallel to each other, are provided;

    a plurality of excitation elements, arranged only on the first pair of the two opposing sides for respectively exciting surface acoustic waves; and

    a plurality of receiving elements, arranged only on the second pair of the two opposing sides for respectively receiving the surface acoustic waves which propagate along straight lines joining between the respective excitation elements and the respective receiving elements, which face one another, in two diagonal directions,said touch panel device being characterized by;

    transmitting surface acoustic waves from the respective plurality of excitation elements in the two diagonal directions respectively, and receiving the surface acoustic waves from the two diagonal directions by the respective plurality of receiving elements, thus propagating surface acoustic waves across said substrate, between the facing excitation elements and receiving elements; and

    detecting a position of an object in contact with said substrate, based on received results in said receiving elements.
