Abstract

In at least one embodiment, a plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints describing a geographical route are received. The plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints are filtered based upon at least one of a set including a threshold distance between pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints and a velocity indicated by pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints. A smoothed route is generated by modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints. The smoothed route is stored in data storage.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving a plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints describing a geographical route;

filtering the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon at least one of a set including a threshold distance between pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints and a velocity indicated by pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints;

generating a smoothed route by modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints; and

storing the smoothed route in data storage.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said generating a smoothed route includes modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon one or more uncertainties associated with the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said generating a smoothed route includes modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon one or more weights associated with the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said generating a smoothed route includes modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon one or more weighted averaging algorithms.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said generating a smoothed route includes modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon one or more curve fitting formulas.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said filtering of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon the threshold distance between pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints includes determining if the distance between two consecutive raw time-stamped waypoints is less than the threshold distance.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the threshold distance is based upon one or more positional accuracies associated with the two consecutive raw time-stamped waypoints.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein a different positional accuracy is associated with each of the two consecutive raw time-stamped waypoints.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein the most recent of the two consecutive raw time-stamped waypoints is discarded in response to determining that the distance between the two consecutive raw time-stamped waypoints was less than the threshold distance.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein said filtering of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon the velocity indicated by pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints includes

calculating a first velocity based upon the distance between a first pair of the raw time-stamped waypoints and the time difference between the first pair of raw time-stamped waypoints and

calculating a second velocity based upon the distance between a second pair of the raw time-stamped waypoints and the time difference between the second pair of raw time-stamped waypoints.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said filtering of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon the velocity indicated by pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints further includes determining if the ratio of the first velocity to the second velocity is greater than a threshold value.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein one of the time-stamped waypoints is discarded in response to determining that the ratio of the first velocity to the second velocity is greater than a threshold value.

The method of claim 6, wherein said filtering of the plurality of raw time- stamped waypoints based upon the velocity indicated by pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints occurs in response to said determining that the distance between the two consecutive raw time-stamped waypoints was not less than the threshold distance.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said generating a smoothed route by modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints occurs in response to said filtering of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon the velocity indicated by pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints are generated by a satellite navigational system receiver and received by a processor of a mobile device.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein said receiving of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints by the processor of the mobile device occurs while the mobile device is physically supported by a user engaged in an athletic activity.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the user engaged in the athletic activity is in locomotion on foot.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the smoothed route data is stored in data storage of a mobile device.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein said filtering the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints and said generating the smoothed route are performed in substantially real-time while the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints are being received.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein said filtering and said generating are performed using at least one processor of a mobile device physically supported by a user engaged in an athletic activity.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein said filtering the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints and said generating the smoothed route are performed after all of the raw time-stamped waypoints have been received.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein said filtering and said generating are performed using at least one processor of a remote data processing system.

23. A method for use with a mobile device comprising:

a processor of the mobile device receiving a plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints describing a geographical route while the mobile device is physically supported by a user engaged in an athletic activity;

filtering the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon at least one of a set including a threshold distance between pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints and a velocity indicated by pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints;

generating a smoothed route by modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints; and

storing the smoothed route in data storage.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the processor of the mobile device performs said filtering the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints and said generating the smoothed route are performed while the mobile device is physically supported by the user engaged in the athletic activity.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein a processor of a remote data processing system performs said filtering the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints and said generating the smoothed route are performed after the user'"'"'s athletic activity has ceased.

26. A system for filtering time-stamped waypoints comprising:

a satellite navigational system receiver configured to generate a plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints describing a geographical route of a user engaged in an athletic activity; and

a processor configured to filter the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints based upon at least one of a set including a threshold distance between pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints and a velocity indicated by pairs of the plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein said processor is further configured to generate a smoothed route by modifying at least some of the filtered plurality of raw time-stamped waypoints.

28. The system of claim 26,

wherein said satellite navigational system receiver and said processor are included within the same housing, and

wherein the housing is configured to be physically supported by the user while the user is engaged in the athletic activity.

29. The system of claim 26, wherein

wherein said satellite navigational system receiver is configured to be physically supported by the user while the user is engaged in the athletic activity, and

wherein said processor is physically coupled to a server computer system remotely located with respect to said satellite navigational system receiver.
