Stent and catheter assembly and method for treating bifurcations
First Claim
1. A catheter system for deploying a Y-shaped stent in a bifurcation, comprising:
- a catheter shaft having a proximal end and a distal end;
a bifurcated balloon attached to the distal end of said catheter shaft, said balloon having first and second branches, each branch having a distal end, said balloon having a first configuration wherein said distal ends of said branches converge and a second configuration wherein said distal ends of said branches diverge; and
a first guide wire for converting said balloon from said first configuration to said second configuration wherein said first guide wire extends through said first branch of said balloon, and wherein said first guide wire engages the distal end of said second branch of said balloon to maintain the balloon in said first configuration.

Abstract
An apparatus and method is provided for stenting bifurcated vessels. A proximal angled stent is configured for implanting in a side-branch vessel wherein the proximal angled stent has an angulated portion that corresponds to the angle formed by the intersection of the side-branch vessel and the main vessel so that all portions of the side-branch vessel at the bifurcation are covered by the proximal angled stent. A main-vessel stent is provided for implanting in the main vessel, wherein the main-vessel stent has an aperture or stent cell that aligns with the opening to the side-branch vessel to permit unobstructed blood flow between the main vessel and the side-branch vessel. Side-branch and main-vessel catheter assemblies are advanced over a pair of guide wires for delivering, appropriately orienting, and implanting the proximal angled stent and the apertured stent.

7. A stent delivery system, comprising:
-
a branched balloon having two distal ends that are biased so as to diverge from one another; and a guide wire routed through said balloon so as to overcome said bias and releasably maintain said distal ends in a converging pattern wherein said guide wire is routed through one of said two distal ends, and wherein said guide wire slidably engages the other of said two distal ends so as to maintain said distal ends in a converging pattern. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11)

12. A catheter system for deploying a Y-shaped stent in a bifurcation, comprising:
-
a catheter shaft having a proximal end and a distal end; a first balloon attached to the distal end of said catheter shaft; a second balloon attached to the distal end of said catheter shaft; a first guide wire routed through said balloons so as to releasably maintain the distal ends in a converging configuration wherein said first guide wire is routed through the balloon and into engagement with the distal end of the second balloon, and wherein retraction of said guide wire causes guide wire to disengage the distal end of said second balloon so as to release them from said converging configuration. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14)
