Abstract

A system drives one or plurality of LEDs regulating their brightness by controlling LEDs average current or voltage. The system includes a switching power converter and an integrated digital regulator with at least one of electrical, thermal and optical feedbacks. The regulator is constructed as a hysteretic peak current mode controller for continuous mode of operation of the power converter. For discontinuous mode of operation of the power converter a pulse averaging sliding mode control is being used. Average LED current is measured by integrating LED pulse current at off time and hysteretically adjusting on time of the power switch. Input battery is protected from discharging at abnormally low impedance of the output.

Claims

1. A system for providing power to one or more light emitting diodes, the system couplable to an energy source, the system comprising:

a power converter comprising an inductor and a power switch, the power converter couplable to the one or more light emitting diodes, the power converter having a dual phase cycle comprising an on phase when the power switch is closed and an off phase when the power switch is open;

an output current sensor to sense an output current level;

a peak current sensor to sense a peak current level; and

a regulator coupled to the power converter, to the output current sensor and to the peak current sensor, the regulator to determine an integrated output current level during the off phase, to compare the integrated output current level to a reference signal to provide a control signal indicating a set point, to compare the peak current level to the set point, and to turn off the power switch when the peak current level substantially reaches the set point.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the regulator further comprises a second comparator coupled to the power switch, the second comparator to compare the peak current level to the set point and to provide a corresponding output to control switching of the power switch.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the regulator further is to control the dual phase cycle at a constant frequency.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the regulator further is to increment or decrement the control signal once per switching cycle by an amount inversely proportional to a difference between the reference signal and the integrated output current level.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the regulator further is to increment or decrement the control signal once per cycle by an amount defined in a look up table, the look up table further storing a fixed minimum level and a fixed maximum level.

6. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an optical sensor to sense an optical output;

wherein the regulator further is to increment or decrement the control signal once per switching cycle by an amount inversely proportional to a difference between the reference signal and the sensed optical output.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a thermal sensor to sense a temperature;

wherein the regulator further is to adjust the reference signal based on the sensed temperature to compensate for a brightness change from the one or more light emitting diodes.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the power converter is a boost circuit or a buck-boost circuit.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a low voltage protection circuit to turn off the power switch when an input voltage is lower than a fixed threshold.

10. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a temperature protection circuit to turn off the power switch when a sensed temperature is higher than a first fixed threshold, and to enable operation of the power switch when the sensed temperature is lower than a second fixed threshold, the second fixed threshold being lower than the first fixed threshold.

11. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an isolation power switch coupled to the one or more light emitting diodes and ground to disconnect the one or more light emitting diodes from the energy source during an abnormal mode or a system shut down;

an abnormal mode comparator to turn off the isolation power switch when an output voltage drops below an input voltage;

a logic block to process signals to shut down the isolation power switch; and

a second buffer to drive said isolation power switch.

12. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an ambient optical photosensor to adjust the reference signal proportionally to ambient light conditions to regulate a brightness of the one or more light emitting diodes.

13. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an overload comparator coupled to the output current sensor and an overload set signal, the overload comparator to send a fault signal to the regulator indicating a fault condition, and wherein the regulator either turns off the power switch in response to the fault signal until a power reset or turns said power switch on and off to limit an overload current in the one or more light emitting diodes.

14. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an output overvoltage protection circuit comprising a zener diode and a resistor.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the regulator further comprises an integrator coupled to the output current sensor to generate the integrated output current level.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the regulator further comprises a first comparator for comparing the integrated output current level to the reference signal.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the regulator further comprises digital logic to sample an output from the first comparator, to generate the control signal indicating the set point, and to reset the integrator.
