1. A variable reflectance mirror assembly, comprising:
- a first substantially transparent substrate having first and second surfaces, the first substrate including a substantially transparent layer of material on at least a portion of the second surface;
a second substrate having third and fourth surfaces, the second substrate including at least one at least partially reflective layer on at least a portion of the third surface;
a first electrical contact electrically connected to said substantially transparent layer of material;
a second electrical contact electrically connected to said at least one at least partially reflective layer;
an electrochromic material positioned between said first substantially transparent substrate and said second substrate, the electrochromic material having a light transmittance that is variable as a function of voltage applied between the first and second electrical contacts; and
an electrical circuit configured to insure that said first electrical contact is maintained as an anode and said second electrical contact is maintained as a cathode.
