1. A method of determining whether a mammal has acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALL) or acute myeloid leukemias (AML), the method comprising:

  • providing a biological sample comprising a test cell from the mammal, wherein the test cell is a lymphoid cell or a myeloid cell; and

    determining the level of Wnt5a mRNA within the test cell, wherein a significantly reduced level of Wnt5a mRNA in the test cell, relative to that in a non-cancerous control lymphoid or myeloid cell of the same type as the test cell, indicates that the mammal has ALL or AML.
