Abstract

A dual autodiplexing antenna (300) redirects power flow (303) from an unloaded antenna to a loaded antenna, thereby improving communication performance under loaded conditions. The dual autodiplexing antenna (300) includes a first antenna (101) disposed at a first end (103) of a portable two-way communication device (100). A second antenna (102) is disposed at the distal end (104) of the portable two-way communication device (100). The first antenna (101) and second antenna (102) are coupled to a transceiver (107) by a first transmission line matching circuit (201) and a second transmission line matching circuit (202), respectively. In one embodiment, the first antenna (101) is configured to primarily operate in a first bandwidth, while the second antenna (102) is configured to primarily operate in a second bandwidth. When one of the first antenna (101) or second antenna (102) is loaded, power flow (303) is redirected to the lesser loaded antenna.

Claims

1. A portable two-way communication device, comprising:

a. a first antenna configured for operation at least in a first bandwidth disposed at a first end of the portable two-way communication device;

b. a second antenna configured for operation at least in a second bandwidth disposed at a distal end of the portable two-way communication device; and

c. at least one of a receiver and a transmitter coupled to both the first antenna and the second antenna;

d. two passive transmission line matching circuits, with a first passive transmission line matching circuit coupling the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter to the first antenna and a second passive transmission line matching circuit coupling the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter to the second antenna;

wherein each of the first antenna and the second antenna has associated therewith at least a nominal impedance and a loaded impedance;

wherein when one of the first antenna and the second antenna is loaded, the first passive transmission line matching circuit and the second passive transmission line matching circuit are configured to become mismatched, thereby causing power flowing from the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter is passively directed to a lesser loaded antenna of the first antenna and the second antenna.

2. The portable two-way communication device of claim 1, wherein the first antenna is loaded when at least a hand is adjacent to the first end.

3. The portable two-way communication device of claim 1, wherein the second antenna is loaded when at least a hand is adjacent to the distal end.

4. The portable two-way communication device of claim 1, wherein the first antenna comprises at least a first antenna radiating element, wherein the first passive transmission line matching circuit has a first insertion phase associated therewith.

5. The portable two-way communication device of claim 4, wherein the second antenna comprises at least a second antenna radiating element, wherein the second passive transmission line matching circuit has a second insertion phase associated therewith.

6. The portable two-way communication device of claim 5, wherein the first insertion phase is greater than the second insertion phase.

7. The portable two-way communication device of claim 5, wherein the first bandwidth is between about 1850 megahertz and about 1990 megahertz, further wherein the second bandwidth is between about 824 megahertz and about 894 megahertz.

The portable two-way communication device of claim 5, wherein the loaded impedance comprises an impedance occurring when at least a hand is adjacent to one of the first antenna radiating element or the second antenna radiating element such that a return loss of the one of the first antenna or the second antenna is within a multiple of 2*π

radians plus or minus π

/4 radians.

9. The portable two-way communication device of claim 4, wherein the first insertion phase is selected to increase an input impedance of the first antenna when the first antenna radiating element is loaded.

10. The portable two-way communication device of claim 9, wherein the second insertion phase is selected to increase an input impedance of the second antenna when the second antenna radiating element is loaded.

11. The portable two-way communication device of claim 9, wherein the first insertion phase is selected to substantially maximize the input impedance of the first antenna when the first antenna radiating element is loaded.

12. The portable two-way communication device of claim 1, wherein the portable two-way communication device comprises a mobile telephone having a speaker and a microphone, wherein the first antenna is vicinal with the speaker and the second antenna is vicinal with the microphone.

The portable two-way communication device of claim 1, wherein when the first passive transmission line matching circuit and the second passive transmission line matching circuit are configured to become mismatched, power flowing from the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter is directed to a lesser loaded antenna of the first antenna and the second antenna without passing through a switch.

The portable two-way communication device of claim 1, wherein when the first passive transmission line matching circuit and the second passive transmission line matching circuit are configured to become mismatched, power flowing from the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter is directed to a lesser loaded antenna of the first antenna and the second antenna through only passive components.

The portable two-way communication device of claim 1, wherein when the first passive transmission line matching circuit and the second passive transmission line matching circuit are configured to become mismatched, power flowing from the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter is directed to a lesser loaded antenna of the first antenna and the second antenna through components, wherein the components include devices other than switches.

The portable two-way communication device of claim 1, wherein when the first passive transmission line matching circuit and the second passive transmission line matching circuit are configured to become mismatched, power flowing from the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter is directed to a lesser loaded antenna of the first antenna and the second antenna through components consisting essentially of transmission lines, each transmission line having a length that increases a real part of a low band, loaded impedance relative to a reactive part of the low band, loaded impedance at an input of the transmission line when at least one transmission line is selectively disconnected from another transmission line.

17. A portable two-way communication device, comprising:

a. a first antenna configured for operation at least in a first bandwidth disposed at a first end of the portable two-way communication device;

b. a second antenna configured for operation at least in a second bandwidth disposed at a distal end of the portable two-way communication device; and

c. at least one of a receiver and a transmitter coupled to both the first antenna and the second antenna;

d. two passive transmission line matching circuits, with a first passive transmission line matching circuit coupling the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter to the first antenna and a second passive transmission line matching circuit coupling the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter to the second antenna;

wherein each of the first antenna and the second antenna has associated therewith at least a nominal impedance and a loaded impedance;

wherein when one of the first antenna and the second antenna is loaded, the first passive transmission line matching circuit and the second passive transmission line matching circuit are configured to become mismatched, thereby causing power flowing from the at least one of the receiver and the transmitter is passively directed without a switch to a lesser loaded antenna of the first antenna and the second antenna.

18. The portable two-way communication device of claim 17, wherein when at least a hand is adjacent to the first end, the first antenna is loaded, further wherein when the at least the hand is adjacent to the second end, the second antenna is loaded.

19. The portable two-way communication device of claim 17, wherein the first antenna comprises at least a first antenna radiating element, wherein the first passive transmission line matching circuit has a first insertion phase associated therewith;

further wherein the second antenna comprises at least a second antenna radiating element, wherein the second passive transmission line matching circuit has a second insertion phase associated therewith.

20. The portable two-way communication device of claim 19, wherein the first insertion phase is selected to increase an input impedance of the first antenna when the first antenna radiating element is loaded;

further wherein the second insertion phase is selected to increase an input impedance of the second antenna when the second antenna radiating element is loaded.
