Abstract

The invention is relevant to optical fiber transmission systems, and in particular, pertains to the transceiver cards in an optical fiber transport system. In particular the invention teaches an improved transceiver card architecture that allows high density, flexibility and interchangeability of functionality.

Claims

1. A flexibly interfaceable high density modular transceiver card comprising:

a first tributary module comprising a first forward error correction module that is configured to support a first forward error correction standard;

a radio frequency interface and an electrical interface, each configured to functionally and interchangeably interface the first tributary module to a motherboard of the transceiver card; and

a tributary optics interface configured to functionally interface the first tributary module to a tributary optics module,

wherein the first tributary module is interchangeable with a second tributary module having a second forward error correction module that is configured to support a second forward error correction standard.

The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the tributary module further comprises an in-line serializer/deserializer for converting client serial data to parallel data for use with client data rates above 650 mbps or for when the tributary optics module does not have built in serializer/deserializer.

3. The transceiver card of claim 2 wherein the tributary module further comprises an in-line performance monitoring/mapping device for translating an output of the in-line serializer/deserializer to an interface of the forward error correction module.

4. The transceiver card of claim 3 wherein the interface of the forward error correction module comprises an SFl-4 interface.

The transceiver card of claim 3 wherein the performance monitoring/mapping device is configured to collect performance monitoring data for synchronous optical network or packet-based signals, and wherein the performance monitoring/mapping device is further configured to ensure that client received signals are error-free.

6. The transceiver card of claim 3 wherein the performance monitoring/mapping device is configured to transmit parallel client data to the forward error correction module.

7. The transceiver card of claim 3 wherein the performance monitoring/mapping device comprises a field programmable gate array device.

8. The transceiver card of claim 3 wherein the performance monitoring/mapping device comprises an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) device.

9. The transceiver card of claim 3 wherein the performance monitoring/mapping device is configured to implement packet over synchronous optical network neighbor discovery.

10. The transceiver card of claim 2 wherein the in-line serializer/deserializer is configured to support JO/DCC neighbor discovery.

11. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the tributary module further comprises a line-side serializer/deserializer.

12. The transceiver card of claim 11 wherein the transceiver card is optimally partitioned at an output of the line-side serializer/deserializer, thereby allowing change of a client interface without affecting a transport system.

13. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the tributary optics interface comprises one of OC192, 10 GBE, 4xOC-48, 4xGBL, 8xGBL, 8xGFC, or 16xOC-12.

14. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the forward error correction module is configured to encapsulate a signal with a 25% overhead Reed-Solomon/BCH concatenated code at a forward error correction output rate.

15. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the forward error correction module is configured to encapsulate a signal with a 7% overhead Reed-Solomon/BCH concatenated code at a forward error correction output rate.

16. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the radio frequency interface comprises at a radio frequency connector block.

17. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein a broadband capability of the transceiver card is increased due to the accommodation of a variety of tributary modules and client interfaces on the transceiver card.

18. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the tributary module further comprises a forward error correction field programmable gate array, and wherein the forward error correction field programmable gate array is configured to be controlled by the motherboard.

19. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the forward error correction field programmable gate array is connected to the motherboard via a very high density metric connector.

20. The transceiver card of claim 1 further comprising a power sequencer, wherein the power sequencer is configured to distribute a voltage from the motherboard and to control a power sequencing requirement.

21. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the tributary module further comprises an electrically erasable programmable read only memory, wherein the electrically erasable programmable read only memory is configured to store configuration and calibration data associated with the transceiver card, thereby allowing for independent assembly and calibration of the tributary module.

22. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the tributary module further comprises a timing subsystem configured to generate a fixed reference for at least one output signal.

The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the forward error correction module comprises a built-in pseudo random bit sequence generator and checker, wherein the pseudo random bit sequence generator is configured to verify the quality of a communications link prior to sending traffic and to measure the bit error rate for each channel prior to allowing traffic, allowing channel verification without external test equipment.

24. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the forward error correction module device is configured to support JO/DCC neighbor discovery for OC192 data rates.

25. The transceiver card of claim 1 wherein the first forward error correction standard is different from the second forward error correction standard.

26. The transceiver card of claim 1, wherein the modular transceiver card further comprises:

a third tributary module;

a second radio frequency interface and a second electrical interface, each configured to functionally and interchangeably interface the third tributary module to the motherboard of the transceiver card; and

a second tributary optics interface configured to functionally interface the third tributary module to a second tributary optics module;

wherein the first tributary module and the third tributary module each support one channel of two full duplex channels.

27. A flexibly interfaceable high density modular transceiver card comprising:

a first line optics module having a first optical configuration; and

a radio frequency interface and an electrical interface, each configured to functionally and interchangeably interface the first line optics module to a motherboard,

wherein the first line optics module is interchangeable with a second line optics module having a second optical configuration.

28. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a photoreceiver that includes a semiconductor photodetector.

29. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a receiver electronic amplifier that includes a stripline radio frequency field effect transistor amplifier.

30. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a electronic low pass filter that includes stripline radio frequency capacitors and radio frequency inductors.

31. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a data driver that receives data from a motherboard.

32. The transceiver card of claim 31 wherein the data driver comprises radio frequency power electronics in a stripline package.

33. The transceiver card of claim 31 wherein the data driver is broadband and enables transmission up to 13.5 Gbps.

34. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a clock driver that receives clock signals from a motherboard.

35. The transceiver card of claim 34 wherein the clock driver comprises radio frequency power electronics in a stripline package.

36. The transceiver card of claim 34 wherein the clock driver is narrowband and enables transmission between 8 Gbps and 13.5 Gbps.

37. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a laser, wherein the laser includes an ITU grid compliant semiconductor laser.

38. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a broadband return-to-zero modulator section enabling bandwidths up to 13.5 Gbps and providing enhanced OSNR performance for ultra long haul transport application, and wherein the return-to-zero modulator section comprises an electro-absorptive semiconductor modulator.

39. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a broadband return-to-zero modulator section enabling bandwidths up to 13.5 Gbps and providing enhanced OSNR performance for ultra long haul transport application, and wherein the return-to-zero modulator section comprises a lithium niobate modulator.

40. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a broadband non-return-to-zero modulator section enabling bandwidths up to 13.5 Gbps, and wherein the non-return-to-zero modulator section comprises a lithium niobate modulator.

41. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a broadband non-return-to-zero modulator section enabling bandwidths up to 13.5 Gbps, and wherein the non-return-to-zero modulator section comprises an electro-absorptive semiconductor modulator.

42. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises an optical splitter, wherein the optical splitter comprises a 200 optical decoupler, and wherein the optical decoupler is configured to generate feedback control signals for at least one of a return-to-zero demodulator or a non-return-to-zero demodulator.

43. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first line optics module comprises a control block that is configured to control a function of the first line optics module according to an instruction from a microcontroller.

44. The transceiver card of claim 43 wherein the control block comprises at least one of an analog to digital converter, a switch, a digital to analog converter, or an electrically erasable programmable read only memory.

45. The transceiver card of claim 27 wherein the first optical configuration is different from the second optical configuration.

46. An optical transport system for transporting optical signals, the system comprising:

a terminal comprising a transceiver card configured to receive and convert a first optical signal to an electrical signal, wherein the transceiver card is further configured to convert the electrical signal to a second optical signal; and

an optical fiber coupled to the terminal, wherein the optical fiber is configured to carry the second optical signal transmitted by the transceiver card, and

wherein the transceiver card comprises;

an interchangeable line optics module;

an interchangeable tributary module;

a motherboard configured to control an operation of the transceiver card; and

a radio frequency connector and an electrical connector, each configured to functionally and interchangeably couple the interchangeable line optics module and the interchangeable tributary module to the motherboard.

47. The system of claim 46, wherein the interchangeable line optics module includes a first line optics module having a first optical configuration, and

wherein the first line optics module is interchangeable with a second line optics module having a second optical configuration.

48. The system of claim 46, wherein the interchangeable tributary module includes a first tributary module comprising a first forward error correction module that is configured to support a first forward error correction standard, and

wherein the first tributary module is interchangeable with a second tributary module having a second forward error correction module that is configured to support a second forward error correction standard.

49. The system of claim 46, wherein the transceiver card further comprises a tributary optics module interchangeably coupled to the interchangeable tributary module.

50. The system of claim 46, wherein the interchangeable tributary module includes a first tributary module that is configured to accommodate a first data type, and

wherein the first tributary module is interchangeable with a second tributary module that is configured to accommodate a second data type.

51. An optical transport system for transporting optical signals, the system comprising:

a terminal comprising a transceiver card configured to receive and convert a first optical signal to an electrical signal, wherein the transceiver card is further configured to convert the electrical signal to a second optical signal; and

an optical fiber coupled to the terminal, wherein the optical fiber is configured to carry the first optical signal received by the transceiver card, and

wherein the transceiver card comprises;

an interchangeable line optics module;

an interchangeable tributary module;

a motherboard configured to control an operation of the transceiver card; and

a radio frequency connector and an electrical connector, each configured to functionally and interchangeably couple the interchangeable line optics module and the interchangeable tributary module to the motherboard.

52. The system of claim 51, wherein the interchangeable line optics module includes a first line optics module having a first optical configuration, and

wherein the first line optics module is interchangeable with a second line optics module having a second optical configuration.

53. The system of claim 51, wherein the interchangeable tributary module includes a first tributary module comprising a first forward error correction module that is configured to support a first forward error correction standard, and

wherein the first tributary module is interchangeable with a second tributary module having a second forward error correction module that is configured to support a second forward error correction standard.

54. The system of claim 51, wherein the transceiver card further comprises a tributary optics module interchangeably coupled to the interchangeable tributary module.

55. The system of claim 51, wherein the interchangeable tributary module includes a first tributary module that is configured to accommodate a first data type, and

wherein the first tributary module is interchangeable with a second tributary module that is configured to accommodate a second data type.

56. A flexibly interfaceable high density modular transceiver card comprising:

a first tributary means comprising a first forward error correction means for supporting a first forward error correction standard;

a radio frequency interface means and an electrical interface means, each for functionally and interchangeably interfacing the first tributary means to a motherboard of the transceiver card; and

a tributary optics interface means for functionally interfacing the first tributary means to a tributary optics means,

wherein the first tributary means is interchangeable with a second tributary means having a second forward error correction means for supporting a second forward error correction standard.

57. The transceiver card of claim 56 wherein the tributary means further comprises an in-line serializer/deserializer means for converting client serial data to parallel data for use with client data rates above 650 mbps or for when the tributary optics module does not have built in serializer/deserializer.

58. The transceiver card of claim 56 wherein the tributary means further comprises a line-side serializer/deserializer means.

59. The transceiver card of claim 57 wherein the tributary module further comprises an in-line performance monitoring/mapping means for translating an output of the in-line serializer/deserializer means to an interface of the forward error correction means.

60. The transceiver card of claim 59 wherein the performance monitoring/mapping means is configured to collect performance monitoring data for synchronous optical network or packet-based signals, and wherein the performance monitoring/mapping means is further configured to ensure that client received signals are error-free.

61. The transceiver card of claim 59 wherein the performance monitoring/mapping means is configured to transmit parallel client data to the forward error correction module.
