a liquid crystal cell, having a front side and a rear side, comprising front and rear panels with polarizing means on each said panel, anda backlight system comprising a light source and a reflector,wherein the polarizing means on the front panel include a reflective polarizer and a dichroic polarizer,wherein the transmission axes of said reflective and dichroic polarizers coincide and the dichroic polarizer is placed on the front side of the reflective polarizer,wherein only one side of said liquid crystal cell comprises a reflective polarizer,wherein the polarizing means on the rear panel is not a reflective polarizer, andwherein the directions of the transmission axes of said polarizing means on the front panel and the rear panel are perpendicular.
