Abstract

An apparatus and method is provided for stenting bifurcated vessels. A proximal angled stent is configured for implanting in a side-branch vessel wherein the proximal angled stent has an angulated portion that corresponds to the angle formed by the intersection of the side-branch vessel and the main vessel so that all portions of the side-branch vessel at the bifurcation are covered by the proximal angled stent. A main-vessel stent is provided for implanting in the main vessel, wherein the main-vessel stent has an aperture or stent cell that aligns with the opening to the side-branch vessel to permit unobstructed blood flow between the main vessel and the side-branch vessel. Side-branch and main-vessel catheter assemblies are advanced over a pair of guide wires for delivering, appropriately orienting, and implanting the proximal angled stent and the apertured stent.

Claims

1. A catheter system for deploying a Y-shaped stent in a bifurcation, comprising:

a catheter having a proximal end and an expandable branched distal end with a first branch and a second branch, said distal end having a first configuration wherein said branches converge and a second configuration wherein said branches diverge; and

a first guide wire for converting said distal end from said first configuration to said second configuration wherein said first guide wire extends through said first branch, wherein said first guide wire engages said second branch to maintain said distal end in said first configuration, and wherein said distal end assumes said second configuration upon disengagement of said guide wire from said second branch.

2. The catheter system of claim 1, wherein said distal end comprises a single balloon for expanding both branches.

3. The catheter system of claim 1, wherein said distal end comprises two balloons, one for expanding each branch.

4. The catheter system of claim 1, wherein disengagement is achieved by retraction of said first guide wire.

5. The catheter system of claim 1, wherein a second guide wire extends through said second branch.

6. A stent delivery system, comprising:

a catheter having an expandable branched distal end with a first branch and a second branch, wherein said two branches are biased so as to diverge from one another; and

a first guide wire routed through said catheter so as to overcome said bias and releasably maintain said distal ends in a converging configuration wherein said first guide wire is routed through said first branch, wherein said first guide wire engages said second branch, and wherein said first guide wire is routed so as to disengage said second branch upon retraction of said first guide wire.

7. The stent delivery system of claim 6, wherein a second guide wire is routed through said second branch.

8. The stent delivery system of claim 6, wherein both branches are expanded by a single balloon.

9. The stent delivery system of claim 6, wherein each branch is expanded by a individual balloon.

10. A catheter system for deploying a Y-shaped stent in a bifurcation, comprising:

a catheter having an expandable branched distal end having a first branch and a second branch;

a first guide wire routed through said first branch so as to maintain said first and second branches in a non-diverging configuration wherein said first guide wire engages said second branch to maintain said non-diverging configuration, and wherein said first guide wire is routed so as to disengage said second branch upon retraction.

11. The catheter system of claim 10, wherein a second guide wire is routed through said second branch.

12. The catheter system of claim 10, wherein said first guide wire extends along at least a portion of the exterior of said catheter.
