1. An image pickup apparatus comprising:

  • an image pickup section for taking images of the same object at a plurality of different exposure amounts to generate image signals corresponding to a plurality of frames of different exposure amounts;

    a synthesizing section for generating wide dynamic range, synthesized image by synthesizing image signals corresponding to the plurality of frames of different exposure amounts generated by the image pickup section;

    a correcting section for correcting exposure amounts of at least one image signal of the image signals corresponding to the plurality of frames of different exposure amounts generated at the image pickup section, said corrected exposure amounts correspond to a shift to an actual exposure amount ratio from a previously set exposure amount ratio; and

    a switching control section for performing ON/OFF switching of the correction operation of said correcting section on the basis of an image taking mode set to the image pickup apparatus;

    wherein, when the correction operation of said correcting section is OFF, said synthesizing section synthesizes the image signals corresponding to the plurality of frames of different exposure amounts at said previously set exposure amount ratio,wherein, when the correction operation of said correcting section is ON, said synthesizing section synthesizes the image signals corresponding to the plurality of frames of different exposure amounts at said actual exposure amount ratio,wherein the actual exposure amount ratio is determined based on extracted image data of regions without lack of detail at high level portion and of regions without lack of detail at low level portion of the image signals corresponding to the plurality of frames of different exposure amounts generated at the image pickup section,wherein the actual exposure amount ratio is calculated by obtaining a ratio of a sum of image data of regions without lack of detail at high level portions in a high exposure image signal generated at the image pickup section and a sum of image data of regions without lack of detail at low level portions in a low exposure image signal generated at the image pickup section.
