Abstract

The thermally switched reflective optical shutter is a self-regulating “switchable mirror” device that reflects up to 100% of incident radiant energy above a threshold temperature, and reflects up to 50% of incident radiant energy below a threshold temperature. Control over the flow of radiant energy occurs independently of the thermal conductivity or insulating value of the device, and may or may not preserve the image and color properties of incoming visible light. The device can be used as a construction material to efficiently regulate the internal temperature and illumination of buildings, vehicles, and other structures without the need for an external power supply or operator signals. The device has unique aesthetic optical properties that are not found in traditional windows, skylights, stained glass, light fixtures, glass blocks, bricks, or walls. The device can be tailored to transmit sufficient visible light to see through in both the transparent and reflective states, while still providing significant control over the total energy transmission across the device.

Claims

1. A switchable shutter device for regulating reflection of incident radiant energy comprising

a first reflective polarizer;

a second polarizer; and

a thermotropic depolarizer positioned between the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein

at a first temperature a first percentage of the incident radiant energy is reflected from the device and a second percentage of the incident radiant energy is transmitted through the device;

and

at a second temperature a third percentage of the incident radiant energy is reflected from the device and a fourth percentage of the incident radiant energy is transmitted through the device.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein

the thermotropic depolarizer adjusts polarization of incident light when below a threshold temperature;

above the threshold temperature up to 100% of incident light is reflected by the device, and

below the threshold temperature up to 50% of incident light is reflected by the device.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the second polarizer is a reflective polarizer.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein

at a first temperature a first percentage of the incident radiant energy is reflected from the device and a second percentage of the incident radiant energy is transmitted through the device;

and

at a second temperature a third percentage of the incident radiant energy is reflected from the device and a fourth percentage of the incident radiant energy is transmitted through the device.

6. The device of claim 4, wherein

the first reflective polarizer reflects up to 50% of the incident radiant energy and transmits a majority of non-reflected radiant energy;

and

the second polarizer reflects up to 100% of radiant energy transmitted by the first reflective polarizer when the thermotropic depolarizer is above a threshold temperature and transmits up to 100% of radiant energy transmitted by the first reflective polarizer when the thermotropic polarizer is below the threshold temperature.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the second polarizer is a partially reflective polarizer.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the second polarizer is an absorptive polarizer.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the second polarizer is frequency selective with respect to polarization of the radiant energy.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein either or both of the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer is a diffuse reflective polarizer.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein either or both of the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer is a specular reflective polarizer.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein either or both of the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer is a thermotropic reflective polarizer.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein either or both of the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer is a photovoltaic reflective polarizer.

14. The device of claim 1, wherein either or both of the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer is a polarity-rotating polarizer.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein

above a threshold temperature down to 0% of incident radiant energy is transmitted by the device, and

below the threshold temperature up to 100% of incident radiant energy is transmitted by the device.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is in the form of a thin and flexible film.

17. The device of claim 1 further comprising a transparent substrate that supports the first reflective polarizer, the second polarizer, and the thermotropic depolarizer.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the transparent substrate is a rigid plate.

19. The device of claim 17, wherein the transparent substrate comprises a longpass filter, a shortpass filter, or a bandpass filter and is transparent only to certain wavelengths of the radiant energy.

20. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is incorporated into a construction material for regulating the flow of incident light into, and thus regulating the internal temperature of, a building, a vehicle, or other structure.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the construction material is an insulating glass unit.

22. The device of claim 1 further comprising one or more of the following components:

an external reflector, a color filter, a UV or harmful radiation filter, a transparent substrate, a filled or hollow space to provide thermal insulation, an antireflective coating, conductive or insulating adhesives or layers to improve the temperature sensing ability of the device, phase change materials, and low emissivity coatings or devices.

23. The device of claim 1, wherein the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer each define transparent areas to allow transmission of unpolarized radiant energy through the device.

24. The device of claim 1 further comprising an electrotropic control system to supplement and actuate the thermotropic depolarizer at the threshold temperature.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the electrotropic control system further comprises

a controller;

a power supply connected with the controller; and

a temperature sensor connected with the controller.

26. The device of claim 1, wherein a range of wavelengths of radiant energy regulated by the device comprises one or more of visual, infrared, or ultraviolet wavelengths.

27. The device of claim 1, wherein either or both of the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer is a spectrally selective polarizer.

28. The device of claim 1, wherein the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer each have different polarizing efficiencies, polarizing responses, or both, at different frequencies.

29. The device of claim 1, wherein each of the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer has a different polarizing nature at different frequencies.

30. The device of claim 1, wherein either or both of the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer comprises a combination of multiple polarizers.

31. The device of claim 1, wherein the thermotropic depolarizer comprises a liquid crystal.

32. The device of claim 31, wherein the liquid crystal further comprises an additive in a mixture with the liquid crystal to affect optical properties of the liquid crystal, a speed of transition between physical states of the liquid crystal, or both.

33. The device of claim 32, wherein the additive comprises a second type of liquid crystal mixed with the liquid crystal.

34. The device of claim 32, wherein the liquid crystal, additive, or both, is selected to determine one or more of a difference between a freezing temperature and a melting temperature of the thermotropic depolarizer, a transition temperature of nematic-to-isotropic and isotropic-to-nematic phase changes, or a difference between a pair of phase or state changes.

35. The device of claim 31, wherein the additive is selected to improve the stability of a functional response of the device to environmental conditions.

36. The device of claim 1, wherein the thermotropic depolarizer is designed or selected based upon frequency dependent properties of the thermotropic depolarizer with respect to a rotation of polarized light to affect one or more of aesthetic, color, light or energy transmission, absorption, and reflection properties of the device.

37. A switchable optical shutter device for regulating the reflection of light comprising

a first reflective polarizer that reflects up to 50% of incident light and passes up to 50% of the incident light;

a second reflective polarizer, and

a thermotropic depolarizer positioned between the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer that adjusts polarization of incident light below a threshold temperature, wherein

above the threshold temperature up to 100% of incident light is reflected by the device, and

below the threshold temperature up to 50% of incident light is reflected by the device.

38. The device of claim 37 further comprising a transparent substrate that supports the first reflective polarizer, the second polarizer, and the thermotropic depolarizer.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein the transparent substrate is a rigid plate.

40. The device of claim 37, wherein the device is in the form of a thin and flexible film.

41. An insulating glass unit comprising

a first plate of glass;

a second plate of glass;

a first reflective polarizer positioned between the first plate of glass and the second plate of glass that reflects up to 50% of incident radiant energy and transmits a majority of non-reflected radiant energy;

a second reflective polarizer positioned between the first plate of glass and the second plate of glass; and

a thermotropic depolarizer positioned between the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer that adjusts polarization of incident light below a threshold temperature, wherein

above the threshold temperature up to 100% of incident light is reflected by the device;

below the threshold temperature up to 50% of incident light is reflected by the device; and

the second polarizer reflects up to 100% of radiant energy transmitted by the first reflective polarizer when the thermotropic depolarizer is above the threshold temperature and transmits up to 100% of radiant energy transmitted by the first reflective polarizer when the thermotropic polarizer is below the threshold temperature.

42. A switchable shutter device for regulating the reflection of incident radiant energy comprising

a first thermotropic polarizer;

and

a second thermotropic polarizer, wherein

above a threshold temperature down to 0% of incident radiant energy is transmitted by the device, and

below the threshold temperature up to 100% of the incident radiant energy is transmitted by the device.

43. The device of claim 42, wherein

at a first temperature a first percentage of the incident radiant energy is reflected from the device and a second percentage of the incident radiant energy is transmitted through the device;

and

at a second temperature a third percentage of the incident radiant energy is reflected from the device and a fourth percentage of the incident radiant energy is transmitted through the device.

44. A method for regulating reflection and transmission of incident radiant energy comprising

providing a thermally switched reflective optical shutter (TSROS) device comprising a first reflective polarizer, a second polarizer, and a thermotropic depolarizer located between the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer, wherein the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer are oriented crosswise with respect to one another;

locating the TSROS device so that radiant energy is incident upon it;

reflecting a first percentage of the radiant energy from the TSROS device and transmitting a second percentage of the radiant energy through the TSROS device at a first temperature; and

reflecting a third percentage of the radiant energy from the TSROS device and transmitting a fourth percentage of the radiant energy through the TSROS device at a second temperature.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein

when the first temperature is above a threshold temperature, the first reflecting operation further comprises

reflecting up to 100% of radiant energy with the first reflective polarizer and second polarizer;

and

when the second temperature is below the threshold temperature, the method further comprises

depolarizing a portion of the radiant energy transmitted between the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer;

transmitting up to 50% of the radiant energy through the TSROS device; and

reflecting up to 50% of the radiant energy.

46. The method of claim 45 further comprising orienting the first reflective polarizer crosswise with the second polarizer in a non-orthogonal orientation to increase transmission of the incident radiant energy.

47. A method for regulating reflection and transmission of radiant energy comprising

orienting a first reflective polarizer crosswise with a second polarizer;

reflecting up to 50% and absorbing up to 50% of incident radiant energy with the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer when above a threshold temperature; and

when below the threshold temperature,

depolarizing a portion of the incident radiant energy transmitted between the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer;

transmitting up to 50% of the radiant energy through the first reflective polarizer and the second polarizer; and

reflecting up to 50% of the incident radiant energy.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein the orienting operation further comprises orienting the first reflective polarizer crosswise with the second polarizer in a non-orthogonal orientation to increase transmission of the incident radiant energy.

49. A method for regulating reflection and transmission of radiant energy comprising orienting a first thermotropic polarizer crosswise with a second thermotropic polarizer;

reflecting up to 100% of incident radiant energy with the first and second thermotropic polarizers when above a threshold temperature; and

wherein when below a threshold temperature the first and second thermotropic polarizers cease to polarize below the threshold temperature,

transmitting up to 100% of the incident radiant energy.

50. A method for regulating reflection and transmission of radiant energy comprising

orienting a reflective polarizer crosswise with a polarity-rotating polarizer;

interposing a thermotropic depolarizer between the reflective polarizer and the polarity-rotating polarizer

reflecting up to 100% of incident radiant energy with the reflective polarizer and the polarity-rotating polarizer when the thermotropic depolarizer is above a threshold temperature; and

when below a threshold temperature,

transmitting up to 100% of the incident radiant energy through the reflective polarizer, thermotropic depolarizer, and the polarity-rotating polarizer.

51. A method for displaying a reflective image comprising

arranging a thermoreflective material or device on a surface in a shape of a desired image or removing the thermoreflective material in an area to form an image area;

and

reflecting incident light from the thermoreflective material above or below a particular threshold temperature or range of temperatures, wherein the reflective image becomes visible.

52. The method of claim 51 further comprising

incorporating a reflective optical component into the thermoreflective material;

and

altering an optical response of the thermoreflective material when the thermoreflective image is active.

53. The method of claim 51 further comprising making the rotation angle of a depolarizer in the thermoreflective material spacially dependent or by making the polarization efficiency of the one or more of polarizers in the thermoreflective material spacially dependent.

54. A method for regulating an internal temperature of a building, a vehicle, or other structure comprising

placing a thermoreflective material on an exterior of a structure;

and

inverting a temperature response of the thermoreflective material whereby the thermoreflective material is primarily reflective of incident radiant energy at high temperatures and comparatively more transparent to, absorbent of, or both, incident radiant energy at low temperatures.

55. The method of claim 54 further comprising positioning the thermoreflective material on the structure to receive maximum incident radiant energy at cold temperatures or in the winter season and to receive minimum incident radiant energy at high temperatures or in the summer season.
