System and method for managing patient bed assignments and bed occupancy in a health care facility
First Claim
1. A computer-implemented system for facilitating patient placement in a location of a healthcare facility, comprising:
- (a) a server computer having access to a database in which is stored patient attributes for a plurality of patients and bed attributes for a plurality of locations of the healthcare facility;
(b) a system interface that facilitates data communications to the server computer from a patient admissions/discharge system of the healthcare facility, the system interface facilitating data communications to the server computer from the patient admissions/discharge system of the healthcare facility such that select information, provided via computer-generated transactional messages from the patient admissions/discharge system of the healthcare facility, is automatically fed into the database from the patient admissions/discharge system of the healthcare facility, thereby continually updating the database; and
(c) an end-user application for healthcare professionals loaded onto or into a computer-readable medium, the end-user application for healthcare professionals being configured to communicate with the server computer and being further configured to provide a user interface for utilization of the system by health care professional;
(d) wherein,(i) the end-user application for healthcare professionals is configured to present, via the user interface provided by the end-user application for healthcare professionals, to a healthcare professional utilizing the end-user application for healthcare professionals, a list comprising an identification of each of two or more patients of the plurality of patients whose patient attributes are stored in the database, and is further configured to allow a healthcare professional to select, via the user interface provided by the end-user application for healthcare professionals, one of the patients for whom identifications are presented (“
the selected patient”
);
(ii) based on the selected patient in said step (d)(i), the server computer matches requirements of the selected patient to available resources of the healthcare facility by comparing patient criteria of the selected patient with bed attributes stored in the database, the patient criteria comprising patient attributes for the selected patient that are stored in the database;
(iii) based on the matches in said step (d)(ii), the server computer identifies available locations of the healthcare facility for patient placement based on the comparison of the patient criteria of the selected patient with bed attributes stored in the database; and
(iv) based on the identified locations in said step (d)(iii), the end-user application for healthcare professionals is configured to present, via the user interface provided by the end-user application for healthcare professionals, to the healthcare professional utilizing the end-user application for healthcare professionals, a list comprising an identification of each of two or more of the identified locations, and is further configured to allow the healthcare professional to select, via the user interface provided by the end-user application for healthcare professionals, for placement of the selected patient, one of the locations for which identifications are presented for patient placement of the selected patient.

Abstract
An integrated health care delivery network with enabling software and network technology to maximize bed resources, manage varying census levels, and avoid patient diversions through real-time monitoring, automation and communication, is disclosed. Preferably, the present invention is embodied in a bed management system that interfaces with and complements existing Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) systems. The bed management system is an easy-to-use business intelligence application that is designed to allow administrators, clinicians and managers to easily access, analyze and display real-time patient and bed availability information from ancillary information systems, databases and spreadsheets. It enables users to see trends and relationships in hospital (bed) management data directly from their desktop personal computers.
