1. A system for processing documents with MICR data, comprising:
- a document processor adapted to convert paper documents into electronic files;
a processor controller adapted to control the operation of the document processor; and
a file controller adapted to handle said electronic files;
wherein the system is adapted to perform correction of MICR data in said electronic files by comparing a number in said MICR data for one of said paper documents that contains one or more failed characters that were not or could not be read or retrieved by, or that were improperly or incorrectly read or retrieved by, the document processor, with a plurality of permissible numbers each including valid characters operable to replace the failed characters, wherein said plurality of permissible numbers are not determined from historical transaction data with MICR numbers associated with the paper document being processed, and automatically and electronically replacing said failed number with one of said permissible numbers.

8. A method for processing documents with MICR data, comprising the steps of:
-
loading one or more documents to be processed into a document processor; retrieving MICR data and document image from the document being processed; examining the data to determine if any errors exist in the MICR data; and attempting to correct any errors that have been identified in the MICR data by comparing a number in the retrieved MICR data and document image for the document being processed that contains one or more characters that were not or could not be read or retrieved by, or that were improperly or incorrectly read or retrieved by, the document processor, with a plurality of permissible numbers each including valid characters operable to replace the failed characters, wherein said plurality of permissible numbers are not determined from historical transaction data with MICR numbers associated with the paper document being processed, and automatically and electronically replacing said failed number with one of said permissible numbers. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

17. A method for processing checks and similar documents with MICR data, comprising the steps of:
-
loading one or more documents to be processed into a document processor; retrieving MICR data and document image from the first document being processed; attempting to correct any errors that have been identified in the MICR data by comparing a number in the retrieved MICR data and document image for the document being processed that contains one or more characters that were not or could not be read or retrieved by, or that were improperly or incorrectly read or retrieved by, the document processor, with a plurality of permissible numbers each including valid characters operable to replace the failed characters, wherein said plurality of permissible numbers are not determined from historical transaction data with MICR numbers associated with the paper document being processed, and automatically and electronically replacing said failed number with one of said permissible numbers; forwarding the document to a first collection point for truncation; repeating the loading, retrieving, attempting to correct, and forwarding steps until all documents have been processed; and transmitting MICR data and images from the documents to the bank or institution on which said documents were drawn. - View Dependent Claims (18)

19. A computer-implemented method for processing transmitted MICR data and images, comprising the steps of:
-
receiving in a computer memory the MICR data and images for one or more documents; examining the data for the first document to determine if any errors exist in the MICR data; attempting to correct any errors that have been identified in the MICR data by comparing a number in the received MICR data and image for the first document that contains one or more failed characters that are incorrect with a plurality of permissible numbers each including valid characters operable to replace the failed characters, wherein said plurality of permissible numbers are not determined from historical transaction data with MICR numbers associated with the paper document being processed, and automatically and electronically replacing in a computer memory said failed number with one of said permissible numbers; and repeating the examining and attempting to correct steps until all documents have been processed.
