Abstract

A method for coupling a radio frequency electronic device (14) to a passive element (12), such as an antenna, the passive element including a body having an impedance at the operating frequency. the method comprises the steps of attaching a conductive pad having a shape and area corresponding to the predetermined shape and coupling area on the surface of passive element in a nonpenetrating manner, and electrically connecting the device to the conductive pad, such that, in use, the pad and the body have an impedance that is substantially capacitively reactive in nature defined therebetween, whereby the pad is electrically coupled to the body to facilitate: the transfer of electromagnetic energy at the operating radio frequency between the body and the pad. The conductive pad may take the form of a discrete conductive member attached to the passive element by an adhesive or by a biasing member. Alternatively, the conductive pad may take the form of a metallization layer formed on the passive element.

Claims

1. A method for coupling a device operable at an operating radio frequency with a passive element including a body formed of a polymeric material loaded with a conductive filler, the body having an impedance at the operating frequency, the body including a surface, a portion of the surface defining a coupling area of a predetermined shape,

the method comprising the steps of:

a) attaching a conductive pad having a shape and area corresponding to the predetermined shape and coupling area on the surface of the body, the attachment being effected in a non-penetrating manner, the attaching step including the use of a resilient biasing member to urge the conductive pad against the coupling area; and

b) electrically connecting the device to the conductive pad,

the pad being electrically coupled to the body through an impedance that is substantially capacitive reactive in nature,

thereby to facilitate the transfer of electromagnetic energy at the operating radio frequency between the body and the pad.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the conductive pad is a metallization formed on the body.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the conductive pad is attached onto the surface of the body using an adhesive.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the adhesive is a dielectric material.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the adhesive includes a conductive material.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the passive element is an antenna.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrical connection is effected using a wire.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrical connection is effected through abutting physical contact between the device to the conductive pad.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the impedance defined between the pad and the body is less than the impedance of the body at the operating radio frequency.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the impedance between the pad and the body is less than seventy-five ohms (75Ω

) at the operating frequency.
