1. A physiological monitoring method comprising the steps of:
- varying perfusion at a tissue site;
determining, using one or more processors, a plurality of perfusion values and a corresponding plurality of oxygen saturation values at said tissue site;
calculating, using the one or more processor, a constant oxygen consumption relationship between said perfusion values and said oxygen saturation values based on a mathematical relationship between said perfusion values and said saturation values; and
monitoring changes in said constant oxygen consumption relationship as an indication of changes in metabolism at said tissue site.

Abstract
A physiological monitor varies perfusion at a tissue site and measures resulting perfusion values and corresponding oxygen consumption values. A constant oxygen consumption relationship between the perfusion values and the oxygen consumption values is characterized, and changes in that relationship are monitored so as to indicate changes in metabolism at the tissue site.

8. A physiological monitor capable of varying perfusion at a tissue site and measuring resulting perfusion values corresponding to oxygen consumption values, the physiological monitor comprising:
-
an input configured to receive detector signals from a light sensitive detector capable of detecting light attenuated by body tissue at a tissue site, wherein the detector signals include data relating to varying blood perfusion at the tissue site; and one or more signal processors configured to determine a plurality of perfusion values from the detector signals, configured to determine a corresponding plurality of oxygen saturation values, configured to calculate a constant oxygen consumption relationship between the plurality of perfusion values and the plurality of oxygen saturation values based on a mathematical relationship between the perfusion values and the saturation values, and configured to monitor changes in the constant oxygen consumption relationship as an indication of changes in metabolism at the tissue site. - View Dependent Claims (9)
