Endoscopic inflatable retraction device, method of using, and method of making
First Claim
1. Apparatus for retracting an organ inside the body to gain access to an adjacent tissue, the apparatus comprising:
- an expansible cage capable of being inserted into the body through a small incision or puncture while in a collapsed state, the expansible cage comprising a plurality of first inflatable chambers extending along intersecting axes, the plurality of first inflatable chambers being interconnected such that a fluid is communicable therebetween, the plurality of first inflatable chambers supporting a second inflatable chamber defining an enclosed interior space within the expansible cage when in an expanded state, wherein the first inflatable chambers are inflatable independently of the second inflatable chamber; and
an expansion member to selectively expand the expansible cage inside the body.

Abstract
A method of providing access to tissue for a surgical instrument through a body wall is provided. The method includes providing an expandable retractor having a flexible sheath, the retractor being in a collapsed state; introducing the retractor into the body and placing the retractor adjacent the tissue; expanding the retractor; deploying the flexible sheath by engaging the flexible sheath with a tool and driving the flexible sheath through the body wall with the tool; and inserting the surgical instrument from outside the body through the flexible sheath to provide access to the tissue by the surgical instrument.

6. An apparatus for retracting an organ inside the body to gain access to an adjacent tissue, the apparatus comprising:
-
an expansible cage capable of being inserted into the body through a small incision or puncture while in a collapsed state, the expansible cage comprising a first inflatable chamber in the form of a lattice defining a plurality of discrete windows and supporting a second inflatable chamber defining an enclosed interior space when in an expanded state, the second inflatable chamber being positioned within the first inflatable chamber; and an expansion member connected to at least one of the first and second inflatable chambers for selectively expanding at least one of the first and second inflatable chambers when the expansible cage is inside the body. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9)

10. An apparatus for retracting an organ inside the body to gain access to an adjacent tissue, the apparatus comprising:
-
a plurality of first chambers operatively associated with a second chamber, wherein the plurality of first chambers is inflatable from a collapsed state to an expanded state to thereby provide structural support for the second chamber and the second chamber is inflatable from a collapsed state to an expanded state to thereby define an enclosed interior space, the plurality of first chambers being interconnected such that a fluid is communicable therebetween, and wherein the plurality of first chambers and the second chamber are configured for insertion into the body through a small incision or puncture while in the collapsed state, the plurality of first chambers and the second chamber being relatively positioned such that the second chamber does not extend beyond an outer boundary defined by the plurality of first chambers upon inflation of the second chamber; a first inflation tube in communication with the plurality of first chambers and a second inflation tube in communication with the second chamber such that the plurality of first chambers and the second chamber are inflatable independently of each other; and an expansion member in communication with the first and second inflation tubes to effectuate inflation of the plurality of first chambers and the second chamber. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12)

13. An apparatus for retracting an organ inside the body to gain access to an adjacent tissue, the apparatus comprising:
-
an expansible cage including a plurality first inflatable chambers surrounding a second inflatable chamber, wherein the plurality of first inflatable chambers are repositionable between a collapsed state, in which the expansible cage is configured and dimensioned for insertion through a percutaneous opening, and an inflated state, in which the plurality of first inflatable chambers are configured and dimensioned to support the second inflatable chamber such that the second inflatable chamber is maintained in an expanded condition to define an enclosed interior space within the expansible cage, the plurality of first interconnected inflatable chambers being inflatable independently of the second inflatable chamber; and an expansion member to selectively expand the expansible cage inside the body. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16)
