Syringe devices and methods for mixing and administering medication
First Claim
1. A system for preparing a medicant comprising:
- a needleless syringe having an opening through a male extension fitting at a first end and a piston insertable within a second end;
a container having a first medicant component disposed therein;
an adaptor attachable to the first end of the syringe by a port consisting of a female fitting which matingly receives the male fitting of the syringe, and comprising a housing configured to receive the container;
a piercing structure within the housing configured to pierce a closure of the container, wherein the piercing structure comprises;
a head segment having a widest portion and an opposing tip, a beveled front surface and a back surface that joins with the front surface at opposing cutting edges;
a base portion having a first diameter;
a stem portion extending between the base portion and the head portion having a second diameter that is smaller than the first diameter and shorter than the widest portion of the head segment; and
a fluid passageway extending radially centrally through the base portion, through the stem portion and through the front surface of the head portion at a position where two bevel surfaces meet and at a position other than at the tip;
a valve integral with the adaptor, the valve being configured to control fluid passage through the opening at the first end of the syringe; and
a second medicant component disposed within the syringe.

Abstract
The invention includes a device having a chamber within a syringe. A fluid passageway extends through a syringe piston. A valve is associated with the passageway controlling fluid passage through the piston. The invention includes a piercing structure having a head segment and a body portion, with a channel through the body portion and through at least one surface of the head without passing through the tip. In another aspect the invention encompasses a method of preparing an agent for administration to an individual. A first component is provided within a syringe and a second component is provided within a vial. A closed valve is associated with a fluid passageway between the vial and the syringe barrel through a piston. Valve repositioning allows fluid passage and sliding of the piston joins the first and second components. Repeated sliding of the piston mixes the components to produce the medication agent.
