Abstract

Methods for discover of ceramic nanomaterial suitable for an application by preparing an array of first layer of electrodes and printing ceramic nanomaterial films on the electrodes. A second layer of electrodes is printed on the nanomaterial films of ceramics to form an electroded film array. The electroded film array is sintered. Properties of the sintered electroded film array are measured and one of the array elements with properties suited for the particular application is identified.

Claims

1. A method of discovering ceramic nanomaterial for an application comprising:

forming an electroded film array comprising a plurality of array elements wherein each array element of the electroded film array comprises a first layer of electrode and a ceramic nanomaterial film deposited on the first layer of electrode;

determining a property of each array element of the electroded film array; and

determining whether one or more of the plurality of array elements exhibit a property that is suitable for the application.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the ceramic nanomaterial comprises non-stoichiometric nanomaterials.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the ceramic nanomaterial comprises stoichiometric nanomaterials.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first layer of electrode comprises silver or palladium.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the array is a Taguchi statistical set.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the ceramic nanomaterial comprises one or more chemical elements selected from the group consisting of—

barium, titanium, strontium, tungsten, neodymium, iron and manganese.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the property comprises an electrical property.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the application comprises an electroceramic application.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the act of forming an electroded array comprises printing a first ceramic nanomaterial film on a first array element and a second ceramic nanomaterial film on a second array element.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the first ceramic nanomaterial film comprises a composition that is different from a composition of the second ceramic nanomaterial film.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the first ceramic nanomaterial film comprises a different concentration as applied than the second ceramic nanomaterial film.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein each array element comprises a ceramic nanomaterial film with a unique composition as compared to each other array element.

13. A method of discovering nanomaterials for an application comprising:

forming an array comprising a plurality of array elements, wherein each array element comprises a nanomaterial with a different composition compared to each other array element; and

testing at least one array element to determine a property of the array element, wherein the property comprises a property that is suitable for the application, and wherein the property is dependent at least in part on the composition of the nanomaterial.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the application comprises an electroceramic application;

the property comprises impedance, resistance, inductance, capacitance, temperature coefficient of capacitance, dissipation factor, varistor power coefficient, or varistor non-linearity; and

the array elements comprise at least one electrode layer, and a nanomaterial layer deposited on the at least one electrode layer.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the application comprises a chemical sensor application, and the property comprises sensor sensitivity, sensor selectivity, or sensor response time.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the array elements comprise at least one electrode layer, and a nanomaterial layer deposited on the at least one electrode layer.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the application comprises an optical switch application, and the property comprises transparency.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the array elements comprise nanomaterial alloy films deposited on an optical quartz substrate.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the application comprises a catalysis application, and the property comprises conversion of feed to product.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the array comprises a reactor array, and the array elements further comprise parallel reactors comprising cavities containing the nanomaterials, wherein the nanomaterials in the reactors are exposed to a feed and the product is analyzed for a desired chemical species.
