1. A switch comprised of a linear actuator that includes an electromagnetic drive electromagnetically coupled to an armature that includes (a) a driven element comprised of an electrically conductive material, and (b) at least one switch contact, wherein the armature being linearly movable relative to the electromagnetic drive when electric current is applied thereto, and wherein eddy currents are induced in the driven element during operation and the linear actuator comprises at least one permanent magnet that steers the eddy currents generally in an axial direction.

Abstract
The present invention is directed to an inductively driven electromagnetic linear actuator arrangement employing eddy currents induced by a fixed drive coil to drive its armature. Eddy current focusing fields are employed to direct the eddy currents using Lorentz forces to maximize armature speed. The armature includes a shorted driven coil in a DC magnetic field. This can be supplied by a permanent magnet. When current is applied, a force is felt by the coil in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. Such an actuator is well suited for electrical switching applications including transfer switching applications, circuit breaker applications, and ground fault interrupter applications.

- 1. A switch comprised of a linear actuator that includes an electromagnetic drive electromagnetically coupled to an armature that includes (a) a driven element comprised of an electrically conductive material, and (b) at least one switch contact, wherein the armature being linearly movable relative to the electromagnetic drive when electric current is applied thereto, and wherein eddy currents are induced in the driven element during operation and the linear actuator comprises at least one permanent magnet that steers the eddy currents generally in an axial direction.

The switch of claim a 1 wherein the electromagnetic drive comprises a drive coil and the driven element comprises a driven coil of shorted turn construction and further comprising a pulse-type power supply that applies electric current to the drive coil of the electromagnetic drive thereby linearly moving the armature wherein the pulse-type power supply comprises at least one capacitor.

8. A switch comprising:

(a) a linear actuator comprising; (1) an electromagnetic drive that includes a permanent magnet and an electromagnetic drive coil that produces a magnetic field when electrical current is applied thereto with the electromagnetic drive including a driven element guide; (2) an armature that includes a driven element movably received in the guide, the driven element is electrically conductive and comprised of a non-magnetic material or a paramagnetic material that is of one piece, unitary and homogenous construction; (b) a first electrical contact carried by one of the electromagnetic drive and the armature; (c) a second electrical contact that is fixed relative to the first electrical contact and that is capable of making electrical connection with the first electrical contact permitting electrical current flow through the first and second electrical contacts; and wherein electric current applied to the electromagnetic drive coil causes relative movement between the armature and electromagnetic drive moving the first electrical contact relative to the second electrical contact with the armature and electromagnetic drive relatively movable so as to move the first electrical contact from one position where the first and second electrical contacts are electrically connected to another position disposed from the one position where the first and second electrical contact are not electrically connected. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

17. A switch comprising:

(a) a linear actuator comprising; (1) an electromagnetic drive that includes a plurality of permanent magnets arranged with opposite poles spaced apart defining a gap therebetween and opposing one another and an electromagnetic drive coil that produces a magnetic field when electrical current is applied thereto with the electromagnetic drive including a driven element guide; (2) an armature that includes a driven element movably received in the guide and disposed in the gap between the permanent magnets, the driven element is electrically conductive; (b) a first electrical contact carried by one of the electromagnetic drive and the armature; (c) a second electrical contact that is fixed relative to the first electrical contact and that is capable of making electrical connection with the first electrical contact permitting electrical current flow through the first and second electrical contacts when the armature is disposed in a first position and prevent electrical current flow through the first and second electrical contacts when the armature is disposed in a second position spaced from the first position; and (d) a power supply that supplies electrical current to the electromagnetic drive coil generating a drive coil magnetic field, inducing eddy currents in the driven element directed by magnetic fields of the permanent magnets in a direction generally parallel to a lengthwise direction of the armature, generating a driven element magnetic field with the driven element magnetic field interacting with the drive coil magnetic field and displacing the armature. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19)

20. A switch comprising:

(a) a linear actuator comprising; (1) an electromagnetic drive that includes a stator comprising a permanent magnet and an electromagnetic drive coil carried thereby that produces a magnetic field when electrical current is applied thereto with the electromagnetic drive including a driven element guide; (2) an armature that includes a driven element movably guided by the driven element guide and movable relative to the stator, the driven element comprised of an electrically conductive material that is comprised of non-magnetic or paramagnetic material of winding-less construction; (b) a first electrical contact carried by the armature; (c) a second electrical contact that is capable of making electrical connection with the first electrical contact when the armature is disposed in a first position permitting electrical current flow through the first and second electrical contacts; (d) a third electrical contact that is capable of making electrical connection with the first electrical contact when the armature is disposed in a second position permitting electrical current flow through the first and second electrical contacts; and wherein electric current applied to the electromagnetic drive coil causes the armature to move relative to the stator from one of the first and second positions where the first electrical contact is electrically connected to one of the second and third electrical contacts to the other one of the first and second positions where the first electrical contact is electrically connected to the other one of the second and third electrical contacts.

21. A switch comprising:

(a) a linear actuator comprising; (1) a stator comprised of an electromagnetic drive that includes a permanent magnet, a drive coil, and a receptacle; (2) an armature having a shorted turn electrically conductive coil receivable in the receptacle in the electromagnetic drive; (b) a first electrical contact carried by the armature; (c) a second electrical contact; and wherein electric current applied to the drive coil drives the armature relative to the stator between a first position that is one of a switch closed position where the first and second electrical contacts are in contact with each other and a switch open position where the first and second contacts are not in contact with each other and a second position that is one of a switch open position where the first and second contacts are not in contact with each other and a switch closed position where the first and second electrical contacts are in contact with each other.

A switch comprised of a linear actuator that includes an electromagnetic drive electromagnetically coupled to an armature that includes (a) an electrically conductive driven element, and (b) at least one switch contact, and (c) wherein the armature being linearly movable relative to the electromagnetic drive when electric current is applied thereto, (d) wherein the electromagnetic drive comprises a drive coil and the driven element comprises a shorted turn coil that inductively couples with the drive coil when electric current is applied to the drive coil, and (e) wherein the driven element is comprised of a non-magnetizable electrically conductive material and further comprising a steady state magnetic field that interacts with eddy currents induced in the driven element during inductive coupling urging them in a common direction.

A switch comprised of a linear actuator that includes an electromagnetic drive electromagnetically coupled to an armature that includes (a) a driven element comprised of an electrically conductive material, and (b) at least one switch contact, wherein the armature being linearly movable relative to the electromagnetic drive when electric current is applied thereto, wherein the electromagnetic drive comprises a drive coil and the driven element comprises a shorted turn coil that inductively couples with the drive coil, and wherein the electromagnetic drive comprises a stator comprised of an armature-receiving seat defined by a sidewall disposed outwardly of the driven element at least when the armature is seated in the armature-receiving seat and a center post disposed inwardly of the driven element at least when the armature is seated in the armature-receiving seat, with the sidewall comprising a first permanent magnet with one of its poles facing inwardly toward the driven element and the center post comprising a second permanent magnet with one of its poles facing outwardly toward the driven element urging eddy current flow induced in the driven element during inductive coupling in a general axial direction relative to the armature.
