Medical information system
First Claim
1. A system comprising:
- a plurality of bedside units for collecting patient data from patient monitors that collect vital signs patient data from patients and transmitting the vital signs patient data over a network, the bedside units including;
a computer system configured to;
collect the vital signs patient data from the monitors; and
send the vital signs patient data over the network;
a remote medical station for receiving the vital signs patient data from the plurality of bedside units, the remote medical station including;
a storage device for storing the received vital signs patient data; and
a processor to apply one or more predefined rules to at least two vital signs patient data elements from the stored vital signs patient data to calculate a score value that reflects a relationship between the vital signs patient data elements according to the one or more predefined rules and provides an output that causes the processor to produce an alarm that indicates if an intervention is warranted.

Abstract
A medical information system receives patient data and information from various sources and displays such information in a variety of formats for use by member of a medical team in a hospital, clinic, or office. The system receives patient information from doctors, pharmacists, patient monitoring equipment, testing laboratories, and/or computer databases. Access to selected subsets of patient information is provided by user selection of specific data sets identified by job function selection icons. Multiple types of patient data are selectively displayed simultaneously, and to multiple remote users. The system can access stored data according to user-specified formulae to compute a score or metric which reflects a relationship between various factors, each factor being weighted appropriately according to its significance as defined in the formula.

10. A system comprising:
-
a plurality of geographically dispersed bedside units for continuously collecting patient data associated with patients present from patient monitors that connect to patients and collect vital signs patient data from patients in the bedside units, and transmitting the vital signs patient data from the geographically dispersed bedside units over a network; and a medical station connected to the network and configured to receive the vital signs patient data from the monitors in the geographically dispersed bedside units, the medical station comprising; a storage device for storing the received vital signs patient data, a processor configured to; apply one or more predefined rules to at least two vital signs patient data elements received from one of the bedside units to calculate a score value that reflects a relationship between the vital signs patient data elements according to the one or more predefined rules; and determine when an alarm should be produced based on an output from the application of the one or more predefined rules to the at least two vital signs patient data elements from the bedside unit, and a display for presenting a representation of the alarm from the processor to indicate if an intervention is warranted. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

19. A system for simultaneously monitoring a plurality of geographically dispersed intensive care units (ICUs) from a remote location, the system comprising:
-
a plurality of bedside units for continuously collecting monitored vital signs patient data from patient monitors that collect vital signs patient data associated with patients present in the bedside units, the plurality of bedside units transmitting vital signs patient data over a network, with at least one bedside unit of the plurality of bedside units being disposed in each of the plurality of geographically dispersed ICUs for continuously monitoring vital signs patient data associated with at least one patient of each of the ICUs; a remote medical station connected to the network and configured to receive the vital signs patient data from the monitors over the network, the remote medical station comprising; a storage device for storing the received vital signs patient data, a controller to execute one or more computations on at least two vital signs patient data elements from the received vital signs patient data to produce a score value that reflects a relationship between the vital signs patient data elements according to the one or more computations, the computations associated with at least one of the severity of patient conditions and patient treatment, and a display for presenting a representation of an alarm produced by the controller based on an output of the one or more computations on the at least two vital signs patient data elements to determine if intervention is warranted. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26)

27. A method comprising:
-
collecting and transmitting vital signs patient data over a network from a plurality of bedside units, each bedside unit includes a computer system configured to send the vital signs patient data over the network; and receiving the vital signs patient data at a remote medical station from the plurality of bedside units; storing the received vital signs patient data on a storage device located at the remote medical station; applying by a processor one or more predefined rules to at least two vital signs patient data elements from the stored vital signs patient data to calculate a score value that reflects a relationship between the vital signs patient data elements according to the one or more predefined rules to provide an output that causes the processor to produce an alarm that indicates if an intervention is warranted. - View Dependent Claims (28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34)
