Abstract

A personal electronic device determines its orientation by performing a number of operations. The personal electronic device determines one or more sample periods and creates rolling averages of accelerations for a plurality of axes over the one or more sample periods. The personal electronic device then identifies current values for the rolling averages of accelerations along each of the plurality of axes, wherein the current values indicate a gravitational influence and assigns a dominant axis based upon the current values.

Claims

1. A method of determining an orientation of a personal electronic device, comprising:

determining, by the personal electronic device, one or more sample periods;

creating, by the personal electronic device, rolling averages of accelerations for a plurality of axes over the one or more sample periods;

identifying current values for the rolling averages of accelerations along each of the plurality of axes, wherein the current values indicate a gravitational influence;

comparing the current values for the rolling averages of accelerations; and

assigning a dominant axis based upon the current values.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the dominant axis does not correspond to one of the actual axes of the personal electronic device in its current orientation.

3. The method of claim 1, comprising:

detecting a period of a cadence of motion; and

setting at least one of the one or more sample periods such that it has at least the period of the cadence of motion.

4. The method of claim 3, comprising:

setting the at least one of the one or more sample periods to a multiple of the period of the cadence of motion.

5. The method of claim 1, comprising:

utilizing acceleration along the dominant axis to detect a gesture, a periodic human motion, or a gesture and a periodic human motion.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more sample periods include a first sample period that is selected for monitoring a first user activity and a second sample period that is selected for monitoring a second user activity.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

creating a first set of rolling averages of accelerations that includes a first rolling average of accelerations for each of the plurality of axes, wherein the first set of rolling averages of accelerations is created over the first sample period;

assigning a first dominant axis based on current values of the first set of rolling averages of accelerations;

creating a second set of rolling averages of accelerations that includes a second rolling average of accelerations for each of the plurality of axes, wherein the second set of rolling averages of accelerations is created over the second sample period; and

assigning a second dominant axis based on current values of the second set of rolling averages of accelerations.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

upon a change of an orientation of the portable electronic device, updating the first dominant axis and the second dominant axis, wherein the first dominant axis changes more quickly than the second dominant axis.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting user gestures if the dominant axis corresponds to a particular one of the plurality of axes.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the rolling averages of accelerations include a weighted rolling average of accelerations that weights recent accelerations more heavily than old accelerations.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more sample periods include a sample period that is selected based on an application operating on the portable electronic device.

12. A mobile device, comprising:

an accelerometer having a plurality of axes, the accelerometer to measure accelerations along the plurality of axes;

a memory including instructions for determining an orientation of the accelerometer; and

a processor, connected with the memory and the accelerometer, to execute the instructions, wherein the instructions cause the processor to;

determine one or more sample periods;

create rolling averages of accelerations for the plurality of axes over the one or more sample periods;

identify current values for the rolling averages of accelerations along each of the plurality of axes, wherein the current values indicate a gravitational influence;

compare the current values for the rolling averages of accelerations; and

assign a dominant axis based upon the current values.

13. The mobile device of claim 12, wherein the dominant axis does not correspond to one of the plurality of axes of the accelerometer in its current orientation.

14. The mobile device of claim 12, wherein the instructions further to cause the processor to:

detect a period of a cadence of motion, wherein at least one of the one or more sample periods is set such that it has at least the period of the cadence of motion.

15. The mobile device of claim 14, wherein the at least one of the one of more sample periods is set to a multiple of the period of the cadence of motion.

16. The mobile device of claim 12, wherein the instructions cause the processor to utilize acceleration along only the dominant axis.

17. The mobile device of claim 12, wherein the one or more sample periods include a first sample period that is selected for monitoring a first user activity and a second sample period that is selected for monitoring a second user activity.

18. The mobile device of claim 17, wherein the instructions further cause the processor to:

create a first set of rolling averages of accelerations that includes a first rolling average of accelerations for each of the plurality of axes and a second set of rolling averages of accelerations that includes a second rolling average of accelerations for each of the plurality of axes, wherein the first set of rolling averages of accelerations is created over the first sample period and the second set of rolling averages of accelerations is created over the second sample period; and

assign a first dominant axis based on current values of the first set of rolling averages of accelerations and a second dominant axis based on current values of the second set of rolling averages of accelerations.

19. The mobile device of claim 18, wherein the instructions further cause the processor to:

update the first dominant axis and the second dominant axis upon a change of an orientation of the mobile device, wherein the first dominant axis changes more quickly than the second dominant axis.

20. The mobile device of claim 12, wherein the instructions further cause the processor to:

detect user gestures if the dominant axis corresponds to a particular one of the plurality of axes.

21. The mobile device of claim 12, wherein the rolling averages of accelerations include a weighted rolling average of accelerations that weights recent accelerations more heavily than old accelerations.

22. The mobile device of claim 12, wherein the one or more sample periods include a sample period that is selected based on an application operating on the mobile device.

23. A machine-accessible storage medium including data that, when accessed by a machine, cause the machine to perform a method comprising:

determining, by a personal electronic device, one or more sample periods;

creating, by the personal electronic device, rolling averages of accelerations for a plurality of axes over the one or more sample periods;

identifying current values for the rolling averages of accelerations along each of the plurality of axes, wherein the current values indicate a gravitational influence;

comparing the current values for the rolling averages of accelerations; and

assigning a dominant axis based upon the current values.

24. The machine-accessible storage medium of claim 23, the method further comprising:

detecting a period of a cadence of motion; and

setting at least one of the one or more sample periods such that it has at least the period of the cadence of motion.

25. The machine-accessible storage medium of claim 23, wherein the one or more sample periods include a first sample period that is selected for monitoring a first user activity and a second sample period that is selected for monitoring a second user activity.

26. The machine-accessible storage medium of claim 25, the method further comprising:

creating a first set of rolling averages of accelerations that includes a first rolling average of accelerations for each of the plurality of axes, wherein the first set of rolling averages of accelerations is created over the first sample period;

assigning a first dominant axis based on current values of the first set of rolling averages of accelerations;

creating a second set of rolling averages of accelerations that includes a second rolling average of accelerations for each of the plurality of axes, wherein the second set of rolling averages of accelerations is created over the second sample period; and

assigning a second dominant axis based on current values of the second set of rolling averages of accelerations.

27. The machine-accessible storage medium of claim 26, the method further comprising:

upon a change of an orientation of the portable electronic device, updating the first dominant axis and the second dominant axis, wherein the first dominant axis changes more quickly than the second dominant axis.

28. The machine-accessible storage medium of claim 23, the method further comprising:

detecting user gestures if the dominant axis corresponds to a particular one of the plurality of axes.

29. The machine-accessible storage medium of claim 23, wherein the rolling averages of accelerations include a weighted rolling average of accelerations that weights recent accelerations more heavily than old accelerations.

30. The machine-accessible storage medium of claim 23, wherein the one or more sample periods include a sample period that is selected based on an application operating on the portable electronic device.

31. A device, comprising:

a sample period logic to determine one or more sample periods;

a rolling average logic to create rolling averages of accelerations for a plurality of axes over the one or more sample periods;

a gravitational influence logic to identify current values for the rolling averages of accelerations along each of the plurality of axes, wherein the current values indicate a gravitational influence; and

a dominant axis logic to compare the current values for the rolling averages of accelerations, and to assign a dominant axis based upon the current values.
