1. An information recorder comprising:
- a contactless information storage means disposed in a label attached to a recording medium, the recording medium enabled to record material signals,means for generating, from material signals to be recorded to the recording medium, meta data associated with the material signals, said meta data including cue points based on a time code;
means for writing information to, or reading information from, the contactless information storage means, said means for writing information to, or reading information from, being responsive to an electromagnetic field to send or receive information in a contactless manner via the electromagnetic field,wherein the means for writing information to, or reading information from, writes the generated meta data to the contactless information storage means;
means for characterizing at least a portion of the material signals as a function of the meta data; and
means for editing the portion of the material signals, andwherein the means for writing information to, or reading information from, the contactless information storage means is enabled to read meta data from the contactless memory storage means without reading the material signals recorded on the recording medium.

Abstract
In recording information, meta data defined in SMPTE 298M and 335M, buried in video and audio material signals to be recorded to a magnetic tape (30) are extracted, the thus extracted meta data or meta data generated from information other than the material signals, are written to a contactless memory tag (37), whereby it is made possible to acquire meta data about material signals recorded in a recording medium without actual reading of the material signals in the recording medium and use the meta data for search, validation, etc.
