Abstract

A method and system for enabling registration of a user to use a computer system are provided. A printed registration form is provided containing information relating to user registration and including coded data marks containing coded data on an identity and reference points of the form. The coded data marks are substantially undifferentiated marks positioned relative to a set of predetermined nominal mark positions. A processing system associated with the computer system receives indicating data from a sensing device regarding the form identity and a relative position and/or movement of the sensing device. The sensing device senses at least one of the coded data marks and generates the indicating data using the coded data contained therein. The processing system identifies, from the indicating data, a parameter relating to user registration, and stores the parameter so as to be accessible by the computer system.

Claims

1. A method for enabling registration of a user to use a computer system, the method comprising the steps of:

the computer system receiving, from a sensing device, identity data of a printed registration form identifying a digital description of the form stored by the computer system and position data of the sensing device relative to the form, the form being printed with user registration information and a plurality of coded data marks tiled over the entire form, each coded data mark encoding data indicative of the form identity and the position of that mark on the form, the sensing device generating the form identity and position data by sensing the coded data through interaction with any single one of the coded data marks;

the computer system identifying, from the received form identity data, the digital description of the form; and

the computer system determining, from the identified digital description, at least one user registration parameter associated with the received position data.

2. A method according to claim 1, wherein said at least one parameter is associated with at least one zone of the form, and wherein the determining step includes determining said at least one parameter from the zone relative to which the sensing device is positioned.

3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the coded data contained in each coded data mark is at least partially determined by the position of the mark relative to a set of predetermined nominal mark positions.

A method according to claim 1, in which the at least one parameter is a text parameter of the user registration, the method comprising the step of identifying, in the computer system, that the position of the sensing device relative to the form represents an action of entering handwritten text data by means of the sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the text parameter.

5. A method according to claim 4, comprising the step of converting, in the computer system, the identified handwritten text data into computer text.

6. A method according to claim 5, wherein the converting step is performed using an online text recognition program.

7. A method according to claim 5, wherein the at least one text parameter comprises registration data identifying said user.

8. A method according to claim 7, wherein the registration data includes identification and contact details associated with said user.

A method according to claim 1, in which the parameter is a user authorization parameter, the method comprising the step of identifying, in the computer system, that the user has entered a handwritten signature by means of the sensing device and storing data identifying the handwritten signature so as to be accessible by the computer system.

10. A system for enabling registration of a user to use a computer system of the system, the computer system being configured to:

receive, from a sensing device, identity data of a printed registration form identifying a digital description of the form stored by the computer system and position data of the sensing device relative to the form, the form being printed with user registration information and a plurality of coded data marks tiled over the entire form, each coded data mark encoding data indicative of the form identity and the position of that mark on the form, the sensing device generating the form identity and position data by sensing the coded data through interaction any single one of the coded data marks;

identify, from the received form identity data, the digital description of the form; and

determine, from the identified digital description, at least one user registration parameter associated with the received position data.

11. A system according to claim 10, wherein the coded data contained in each coded data mark is at least partially determined by the position of the mark relative to a set of predetermined nominal mark positions.

12. A system according to claim 10, wherein said at least one parameter is associated with at least one zone of the form.

13. A system according to claim 12 which includes the sensing device, wherein the sensing device is operative to sense the position of the sensing device relative to the form using the coded data contained in the coded data marks.

14. A system according to claim 12, wherein the form includes at least one text zone, and wherein the computer system is used for interpreting the indicating data representing the position of the sensing device in the at least one text zone of the form as handwritten text.

15. A system according to claim 14, wherein the computer system is used for converting said handwritten text into computer text data comprising said at least one parameter.

16. A system according to claim 15, wherein the at least one parameter includes information selected from the group of:

identification information for the user;

address information for the user;

telephone details for the user; and

privacy preferences for the user.
