Abstract

An oil shale formation may be treated using an in situ thermal process. Heat may be applied to the formation to raise a temperature of a portion of the formation to a pyrolysis temperature. Heat input into the formation may be controlled to raise the temperature of portion at a selected rate during pyrolysis of hydrocarbons within the formation. A mixture of hydrocarbons, H₂, and/or other formation fluids may be produced from the formation. The mixture may be separated into condensable hydrocarbons and non-condensable hydrocarbons. The condensable hydrocarbons removed from the formation may be a high quality oil that has a relatively low olefin content and a relatively high API gravity.

Claims

1. A method of in situ treating a relatively permeable formation that contains heavy hydrocarbons, comprising:

providing heat from one or more heat sources to at least one portion of the formation;

allowing the heat to transfer from the one or more heat sources to a selected mobilization section of the formation such that the heat from the one or more heat sources mobilizes at least some of the hydrocarbons in the selected mobilization section of the formation;

controlling the heat from the one or more heat sources such that an average temperature in at least a majority of the selected mobilization section of the formation is at most about 150°

C.;

controlling a pressure in at least a majority of the formation, wherein the controlled pressure is at least about 2 bar absolute;

providing a gas to the formation to increase a flow of the mobilized hydrocarbons in the formation; and

producing a mixture from the formation.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more heat sources comprise at least two heat sources, and wherein superposition of heat from at least two of the heat sources mobilizes at least some of the hydrocarbons in the selected mobilization section of the formation.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the heat sources comprises an electrical heater.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising locating one or more of the heat sources horizontally within the formation.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising producing the mixture from the formation through a production well, wherein the production well is located substantially horizontally in the permeable formation.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising controlling the heat from the one or more heat sources such that the average temperature in at least the majority of the selected mobilization section of the formation is at least about 75°

C.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein mobilizing the hydrocarbons in the selected mobilization section comprises reducing a viscosity of the hydrocarbons.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising controlling a pressure of the provided gas such that the flow of the mobilized hydrocarbons is controlled, wherein the pressure of the provided gas is at least about 2 bar absolute.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising controlling a pressure of the provided gas such that the flow of the mobilized hydrocarbons is controlled, wherein the pressure of the provided gas is at most about 70 bar absolute.

10. A method of in situ treating a relatively permeable formation that contains heavy hydrocarbons, comprising:

providing heat from one or more heat sources to at least one portion of the formation;

allowing the heat to transfer from the one or more heat sources to a selected mobilization section of the formation such that the heat from the one or more heat sources mobilizes at least some of the hydrocarbons in the selected mobilization section of the formation;

controlling the heat from the one or more heat sources such that an average temperature in at least a majority of the selected mobilization section of the formation is at most about 150°

C.;

controlling a pressure in at least a majority of the formation, wherein the controlled pressure is at least about 2 bar absolute;

providing a gas to the formation at a controlled pressure to controllably increase a flow of the mobilized hydrocarbons within the formation; and

producing a mixture from the formation.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the one or more heat sources comprise at least two heat sources, and wherein superposition of heat from at least two of the heat sources mobilizes at least some of the hydrocarbons in the selected mobilization section of the formation.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein one or more of the heat sources comprise electrical heaters.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising locating one or more of the heat sources horizontally within the formation.

14. The method of claim 10, further comprising producing the mixture from the formation through a production well, wherein the production well is located substantially horizontally in the permeable formation.

15. The method of claim 10, further comprising controlling the heat from the one or more heat sources such that the average temperature in at least the majority of the selected mobilization section of the formation is at least about 75°

C.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein mobilizing the hydrocarbons in the selected mobilization section comprises reducing a viscosity of the hydrocarbons.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein the pressure of the provided gas is at least about 2 bar absolute.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein the pressure of the provided gas is at most about 70 bar absolute.
