Abstract

A communication system for communication using wireless signals in a fast macrodiversity switching environment. The wireless signals include downlink signals to and uplink signals from mobile stations where the wireless signals have bursts in time slots. In the communication system, a plurality of transceiver stations have broadcast channels (non-switched) and dedicated channels (switched) for the wireless signals. A zone manager controls the fast macrodiversity switching of bursts in dedicated channels among transceiver stations. The fast macrodiversity switching causes the bursts to have time shifts that are of a magnitude to cause unwanted burst overlap. A macro-diversity timing control controls the timing of bursts, to reduce burst overlap, in dedicated channels that have been dynamically switched timing problem.

Claims

1. A wireless communications station for use in a wireless communications system, the wireless communications station comprising:

a switching processor configured to provide switching information in order to identify candidates among a plurality of transceiver stations that are available to service dedicated channels for communicating with mobile stations, each of the plurality of transceiver stations being configured to transmit and receive wireless signals over said broadcast channels and said dedicated channels, wherein said wireless signals are transmitted in bursts, and wherein the dedicated channels are capable of being switched among the plurality of transceiver stations;

a switching controller configured to dynamically switch among ones of the plurality of transceiver stations to provide said dedicated channels for the mobile stations; and

a macrodiversity timing controller configured to control the timing of said bursts to reduce misalignment of one or more of said bursts caused by the dynamic switching between the plurality of transceiver stations.

The wireless communications station as recited in claim 1, wherein timing of said bursts is controlled by a system timing controller in the communications system, wherein the system timing controller is configured to control the initial timing of said bursts in order to provide initial guard bands between said bursts.

3. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 2, wherein said bursts are transmitted in accordance with time slots.

4. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 2, wherein the macrodiversity timing controller is configured to providing a timing offset to each of said one or more bursts in order to compensate for corresponding timing shifts caused by dynamically switching.

5. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 1, wherein said wireless signals include one or more of the following:

downlink signals transmitted to one of the mobile stations, uplink signals received from one of the mobile stations.

6. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 1, wherein the wireless communications station is configured to be coupled to one or more additional wireless communications stations in order to form a network of wireless communications stations.

The wireless communications station as recited in claim 1, wherein the switching processor is configured to provide host switching information in order to determine candidate broadcasters and candidate collectors of the plurality of transceiver stations to provide the dedicated channels for communicating with the mobile stations.

The wireless communications station as recited in claim 7, wherein the switching controller is configured to dynamically select the dedicated channels for communicating with the mobile stations by selecting among the candidate broadcasters to provide downlink signals and dynamically selecting among the candidate collectors to receive uplink signals from the mobile stations.

9. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 1, wherein the wireless communications station further includes:

a resource manager configured to manage resources in the communications system; and

an airlink controller configured to control radio channels in the communications system.

10. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 9, wherein the wireless communications station includes a station-to-station interface configured to provide and control an interface to one or more other ones of a plurality of wireless communications stations.

11. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 10, wherein the wireless communications station includes a transceiver interface configured to provide and control an interface to a corresponding one of the plurality of transceiver stations.

12. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 10, wherein the wireless communications station includes a base station controller interface configured to provide an interface to a base station controller and to control communications with the base station controller.

13. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 10, wherein the wireless communications station is integrated with a corresponding one of the plurality of transceiver stations.

14. The wireless communications station as recited in claim 1, wherein each of the wireless communications stations is configured to inhibit postulated dynamic switching.

15. A communications system, comprising:

a plurality of base stations each configured to transmit and receive wireless signals over broadcast channels and dedicated channels, wherein the dedicated channels are capable of being switched among base stations; and

a base station controller coupled to communicate with the plurality of base stations, wherein the base station controller is configured to control initial timing of bursts of wireless signals using initial timing advances in order to provide initial guard bands between said bursts;

wherein each of the plurality of base stations further includes;

a switching processor configured to provide switching information in order to identify candidates among the plurality of base stations that are available to service dedicated channels for communicating with mobile stations;

a switching controller configured to dynamically switch among said candidates among the plurality of base stations to provide said dedicated channels for the mobile stations, wherein dynamically switching is capable of causing one or more of said bursts to have a timing shift resulting in a misalignment of said bursts; and

a macrodiversity timing controller configured to control the timing of said bursts based at least in part upon said dynamically switching to reduce the misalignment of said one or more bursts.

16. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein said bursts are transmitted in accordance with time slots.

The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein the macrodiversity timing controller of each of the plurality of base stations is configured to provide a timing offset to each of said one or more bursts in order to compensate for corresponding timing shifts caused by dynamically switching.

18. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein said dynamically switching is capable of causing a first burst in a first time slot to have a particular time shift that overlaps a second burst in a second time slot adjacent to the first time slot, the first burst being associated with a first mobile station and the second burst being associated with a second mobile station, and wherein the macrodiversity timing controller is configured to provide a particular time offset in order to compensate for the particular time slot in order to reduce the overlap of the first burst and the second burst.

19. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein the plurality of base stations are coupled together in order to form a network.

20. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein said wireless signals include one or more of the following:

downlink signals transmitted to one of the mobile stations, uplink signals received from one of the mobile stations.

21. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein each of the plurality of base stations includes one or more broadcasters configured to transmit downlink signals.

22. The communications system as recited in claim 21, wherein each of the plurality of base stations includes one or more collectors configured to receive uplink signals from one or more mobile stations.

23. The communications system as recited in claim 22, wherein the switching processor of each of the plurality of base stations is configured to provide host switching information in order to determine candidate broadcasters and candidate collectors to provide the dedicated channels for communicating with the mobile stations.

24. The communications system as recited in claim 23, wherein the switching controller of each of the plurality of base stations is configured to dynamically select the dedicated channels for communicating with the mobile stations by selecting among the candidate broadcasters to provide downlink signals and dynamically selecting among the candidate collectors to receive uplink signals from the mobile stations.

25. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein each of the plurality of base stations further includes:

a resource manager configured to manage resources in the communications system; and

an airlink controller configured to control radio channels in the communications system.

26. The communications system as recited in claim 25, wherein each of the plurality of base stations includes a base station-to-base station interface configured to provide and control an interface to one or more other ones of the plurality of base stations.

27. The communications system as recited in claim 25, wherein each of the plurality of base stations includes a transceiver interface configured to provide and control an interface to a corresponding one of the plurality of base stations.

28. The communications system as recited in claim 25, wherein each of the plurality of base stations includes a base station controller interface configured to provide an interface to a base station controller and to control communications with the base station controller.

29. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein each of the plurality of base stations is integrated into a corresponding one of the plurality of base stations.

30. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein each of the base stations is configured to inhibit postulated dynamic switching.

31. The communications system as recited in claim 15, wherein each of the plurality of base stations is configured to communicate within a region having one or more zones.

32. A method comprising:

transmitting, from a plurality of transceiver stations, wireless signals over broadcast channels and dedicated channels to one or more mobile stations, wherein the dedicated channels are capable of being switched among the plurality of transceiver stations;

providing initial timing advances of bursts of said wireless signals in order to provide guard bands between said bursts;

identifying candidate transceiver stations among the plurality of transceiver stations to service the dedicated channels for particular ones of the one or more mobile stations;

dynamically switching among the candidate transceiver stations to provide the dedicated channels for the particular ones of the mobile stations, wherein said dynamically switching is capable of causing time shifts in one or more of said bursts; and

controlling, responsive to said dynamic switching, the timing of said one or more of said bursts in order to reduce misalignment of said bursts.

33. The method as recited in claim 32, further comprising transmitting said bursts in accordance with time slots.

34. The method as recited in claim 32, further comprising providing a timing offset to each of said one or more said bursts in order to compensate for corresponding timing shifts caused by dynamically switching.

35. The method as recited in claim 32, wherein said dynamically switching is capable of causing a first burst in a first time slot to have a particular time shift that overlaps a second burst in a second time slot adjacent to the first time slot, the first burst being associated with a first mobile station and the second burst being associated with a second mobile station, and wherein the method further comprises providing a particular time offset in order to compensate for the particular time slot in order to reduce the overlap of the first burst and the second burst.

36. The method as recited in claim 32, wherein said wireless signals include one or more of the following:

downlink signals transmitted from broadcasters of one or more of the plurality of transceiver stations to one of the mobile stations, uplink signals received at collectors of one or more of the plurality of transceiver stations from one of the mobile stations.

The method as recited in claim 36, further comprising determining candidate broadcasters and candidate collectors for providing the dedicated channels for communicating with the mobile stations, each of said candidate broadcasters and candidate collectors being associated with a corresponding one of the plurality of transceiver stations.

38. The method as recited in claim 37, further comprising dynamically selecting the dedicated channels for communicating with the mobile stations by selecting among the candidate broadcasters to provide downlink signals and dynamically selecting among the candidate collectors to receive uplink signals from the mobile stations.

39. The method as recited in claim 32, further comprising inhibiting postulated dynamic switching.

40. The method as recited in claim 32, further comprising each of the plurality of transceiver stations communicating in corresponding regions each having one or more zones.

41. A method for communicating in a wireless communications system, the method comprising:

a mobile station receiving, over a dedicated channel, first wireless signals from a first one of a plurality of transceiver stations; and

the mobile station receiving, over the dedicated channel, second wireless signals from a second one of the plurality of transceiver stations subsequent to a control unit in the wireless communications system dynamically switching from the first to the second transceiver station to communicate over the dedicated channel with the mobile station, wherein said first wireless signals and said second wireless signals are transmitted in bursts;

wherein the timing of said bursts is controlled, responsive to said dynamic switching, to reduce misalignment of said bursts caused by said dynamic switching.

42. The method as recited in claim 41, further comprising the mobile station receiving first wireless signals and said second wireless signals in accordance with time slots.

43. The method as recited in claim 41, wherein initial timing advances are provided to bursts of first wireless signals in order to provide guard bands between said bursts.
