Thermostat operation method and apparatus
First Claim
1. A method for automatically switching between heating and cooling modes of a single thermostat, comprising:
- setting a heating target temperature for a single thermostat;
setting a cooling target temperature for said thermostat;
sensing the temperature within a conditioned region;
placing the thermostat in a heating mode when the sensed temperature is less than the lowest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a first amount with the heating target temperature being above, the same as or below the cooling target temperature;
placing the thermostat in a cooling mode when the sensed temperature is greater than the highest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a second amount with the cooling target temperature being above, the same as or below the heating target temperature;
maintaining the thermostat in the heating mode even when the sensed temperature becomes greater than the cooling target temperature when the cooling target temperature is less than the heating target temperature and the thermostat has entered the heating mode following operation during a cooling mode; and
maintaining the thermostat in the cooling mode even when the sensed temperature becomes less than the heating target temperature when the cooling target temperature is less than heating target temperature and the thermostat has entered the cooling mode following operation during a heating mode.

Abstract
A thermostat may be placed in a heating mode when the sensed temperature is less than the lowest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a first amount and may be placed in a cooling mode when the sensed temperature is greater than the highest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a second amount. The presence or absence of a user may be monitored. If the thermostat is in a user absent mode, a cool setback amount may be added to the cooling target temperature and a heat setback amount may be subtracted from the heating target temperature to arrive at setback cooling and setback heating target temperatures, respectively. The thermostat may comprise a touch-sensitive screen having various display areas.

2. A method for automatically switching between heating and cooling modes of a single thermostat, comprising:

setting a heating target temperature for a single thermostat; setting a cooling target temperature for said thermostat; sensing the temperature within a conditioned region; determining the apparent presence or absence of a user; placing the thermostat in a user present mode or a user absent mode based upon the result of the determining step; if the thermostat is in a user present mode, then; placing the thermostat in a heating mode when the sensed temperature is less than the lowest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a first amount with the heating target temperature being above, the same as or below the cooling target temperature; and placing the thermostat in a cooling mode when the sensed temperature is greater than the highest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a second amount with the cooling target temperature being above, the same as or below the heating target temperature; if the thermostat is in a user absent mode, then; add a cooling setback amount to the cooling target temperature and subtract a heating setback amount from the heating target temperature to arrive at setback cooling and setback heating target temperatures, respectively; placing the thermostat in a heating mode when the sensed temperature is less than the lowest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a first amount with the heating target temperature being above, the same as or below the cooling target temperature; and placing the thermostat in a cooling mode when the sensed temperature is greater than the highest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a second amount with the cooling target temperature being above, the same as or below the heating target temperature; maintaining the thermostat in the heating mode even when the sensed temperature becomes greater than the cooling target temperature when the cooling target temperature is less than the heating target temperature and the thermostat has entered the heating mode following operation during a cooling mode; and maintaining the thermostat in the cooling mode even when the sensed temperature becomes less than the heating target temperature when the cooling target temperature is less than heating target temperature and the thermostat has entered the cooling mode following operation during a heating mode. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4)

6. A method for automatically switching between heating and cooling modes of a single thermostat to control the operation of air heating and cooling units for a conditioned region, comprising:

setting a heating target temperature for a single thermostat; setting a cooling target temperature for said thermostat; sensing the temperature within a conditioned region; placing the thermostat in a heating mode when the sensed temperature is less than the lowest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a first amount with the heating target temperature being above, the same as or below the cooling target temperature, directing the air heating unit to maintain the temperature of the conditioned region within a heating temperature swing amount, and then ending the heating mode when the sensed temperature is greater than the heating target temperature by the heating temperature swing amount; the thermostat being maintained in the heating mode even when the sensed temperature becomes greater than the cooling target temperature when the cooling target temperature is less than the heating target temperature and the thermostat has entered the heating mode following operation during a cooling mode; placing the thermostat in a cooling mode when the sensed temperature is greater than the highest of the heating and cooling target temperatures by a second amount with the cooling target temperature being above, the same as or below the heating target temperature, directing the air cooling unit to maintain the temperature of the conditioned region within a cooling temperature swing amount, and then ending the cooling mode when the sensed temperature is less than the cooling target temperature by the cooling temperature swing amount; and the thermostat being maintained in the cooling mode even when the sensed temperature becomes less than the heating target temperature when the cooling target temperature is less than heating target temperature and the thermostat has entered the cooling mode following operation during a heating mode.
